I can assure you he didn't clean your exhaust ports, and probably didn't say he did, nor would this be beneficial anyway (it'd be back on there by the time it backed out of the shop door). You must have misunderstood him, or he misunderstood you, or something.
BUt yeah, carbon in the exhaust or the egr valve had nothing to do with your engine locking up. IT did so either as a result of an apex seal breaking/twisting at low rpm, or (although very rare in reality) true carbon lock.

OK, i never said the EGR valve killed my engine. I kinda figured that carbon lock killed it by how it went. I am not sure where I said it killed it.
I just wanted to know is there suppose to be THAT much carbon there? Sorry....

Could someone please post information about the creation of carbon in a motor one more time? I find it to be endlessly fascinating reading.
Here you go, just for that comment...

Here's the picture of the small metal piece I found outside the exhaust ports:
Here's a bigger view of it: http://zukin.f0e.net/GXL/steel%20002.jpg
It's not alum. so it wasn't from the housing, as it sticks to a magnet. Definitely steel. It's about 5/32 inch wide, and 1/16 inch thick...highly polished steel.
