Unhappy GOOFY Tranny Problem '90 Non-turbo (Any clues??)

Okay, here's the deal: Several months ago I was at a stop light and when the light went green and I shifted into 1st, the car died. Nothing. Nada. Start it back up, back into 1st, same thing. Pushed it into a parking lot and when it's put into NEUTRAL the car goes into reverse, any other gear would kill the car.

Jump to now: Had everything replaced (clutch, flywheel, tranny)...tranny is used but allegedly in great shape. Same thing. Originally the "mechanics" said they installed it with the shifter in reverse(???) and the shifter was stuck in reverse, but now they clarified that it was installed in neutral, and when they shifted through the gears it's going backwards in neutral and killing the car if put in first.

Does anyone have a clue as to what it could be? First thoughts are the tranny is bad, but I just don't see two different trannies doing the exact same thing....it just seems really suspect to me. Realize that I don't know jack about transmissions, so....well, that's it.

Any help would be highly appreciated. Like I said, it's goofy. Thanks in advance....

Need a little more info.

If I am understanding you correctly putting the car in any gear, but reverse; stalls the car.

When this happened the first time, you blew the tranny.

But now:

Does this happen when you release the clutch with the car in gear, or just when you put it into gear without releasing the clutch?

Is the car stalling, like there is too much force for the engine to turn/move, or is it just dieing?

Are you giving it gas (pressing down slightly on the accelerator pedal) as you are releasing the clutch?

It's pretty much the same symptoms as when I blew the first tranny....put it in neutral and let off clutch=reverse....put it in any gear and let off clutch=kill...these are all with applying gas, as you would when driving normally...

The reason I was asking about just in gear, is that there is a neutral switch on the tranny, and the computer could be bad and mis-interpeting the signal, killing the car, but it sounds like it is stalling in gear.

It sounds like they tried to rebuild your tranny and got the 5th/rev shift fork backwards or mixed up the 5th/rev shift fork with one of the others.

I don't think that you had two different trannys... I think you had one with a bad gear or bearing, that they tried to replace, and they fucked up the tranny. Then they tried to fix it and re-assembled it wrong.

No, there are two different trannies. The one that was originally on the car, and the one that I brought them to put in the car. It still seems like a broken shifter fork, but in both...(?) I dunno, I just know it doesn't look good. What a waste....

Hi,
It sounds like the trans is always in 2 gears at the same time...Could happen to 2 different trannys if the shifter is worn...email me and I might be able to walk you through a fix...Haven't done one of these trannys in awhile so I don't remember exactly how the shifter is setup...I fix trannys for a living so I pretty good idea whats happening to yours..email: joeg3@mediaone.net
