Good seats for the FC

Hey guys. I'm restoring my FC and i wanna redo the interior. I was wondering what are some nice seats that could go in this car. Not worried about what bolts up and what doesn't, just what looks and feels good.

I liked my stock GXL seats a lot but i gave 1 away:S Anyone know any other cars that came with similar seats? What kind of seats came in the late 80's - early 90's 240SX? What kinda seats came in other models of the FC?

Things i liked about the stock GXL seats were the removable/adjustable headrest and the decent lower and upper body support.

Thanks, Basil

There are 4 main styles of stock seats for the FC.

The GXL/ Non P package vert seat. The seat has an adjustable headrest, and lower cushion tilt.
The base sport seat. Pretty much it... no tilt, no adjustable head rest. Found on 86-87 base, Luxury, Sport, 88 SE, 89-90 GTU, 91 coupe.
the P package vert seat (a GXL seat with headrest speakers)
and the Turbo seat (found on the Turbo, 87.5 Sport, 88 GTU, 89-90 GTUs) No adjustable headrest, but increased thigh and side support.

Aftermarket seats or other vehicle seats will not fit as well, as the passengers seat on the FC has the frame actually designed to fit around the transmission hump, and is angled to fit in there. Any seat without that angle will be forced to sit higher than stock, and possible at an un-satisfactory angle.

If you're handy, you can recover the stock seats yourself for not much money. Even if you had to buy a sewing machine it'd be cheaper than buying seats for it. I picked up some APC seats, but the side bolster broke after a month or so of getting in and out. Brides and Recaros are just way too expensive. The stock seat has nice support, and it feels comfortable to me.

auto upholstery shops can help you fix it too. depending on the condition (i dont believe they repair seats with giant missing chunks of padding).

Yeah, but around here, they wanted $800 to recover two buckets in vinyl and wouldn't do cloth. If that's worth it to you, more power to ya So far, even after buying a sewing machine, I'm about $110 to recover both of them in a nice charcoal cloth that matches my interior.

I will say this though, before I started doing this myself, I would have been willing to pay $100 per seat to have someone cover it. Now that I've been doing it myself, I can say it's probably worth $200 per seat to have someone else do it for you

Look around for good condition T2 seats. They are pretty light for stock seats, they will look good in your car, and provide very good support compared to most other factory seats. You might as well get some Corbeau's or something.

The FAQ lists them at 33 lbs. They are by no means racing seats, but for a stock seat with that level of support, that is light. Many cars with good lateral and lumbar support have a **** ton of power motors that make them very heavy. My Mk III Supra power driver seat is very supportive if you set it to be, but it is at least twice as heavy as a T2 seat. My friend's VR-4 has a driver seat that weighs 96 lbs.

GXL seats are nowhere near as supportive as T2 seats IMO. Only OEM Mazda seat that can compare to a T2 seat is an FD seat.

My drivers seat weights 11 pounds It is a racing bucket, though.

Yeah you have a point there, compared to other cars they win, i thought the sport/base seats where the lightest
i have no idea how much my FD seats weigh heh

Using incredibly precise measurements (standing on cheap dial scale with and without the seat and subtracting difference) I determined the drivers seat from a 91 coupe to be about 30 pounds with all the rails, etc.

my gxl driver seat is so good, it's more confortable than any car seat I have ever sit in. I use to have a jetta glx with racing buckets, I won't go back to those(although they were cheaper ones).

I know I'm not hardcore, but $450 for ONE seat that doesn't even recline is exactly the reason I'm recovering my own

I have owned cars ranging from (in no paticular order) Fiat Spyder(73) - Pontiac Sunbird(92) & Accadian(84) - Honda Civic(98) - Toyota Tercel(91) - Dodge Charger(85) - 2 Nissan 300ZX(85-86) - 3 Mazda RX-7(82GSL - 87GXL - 86GX) - Chevrolet Camaro(83)

plus countless cars I have borrowed/driven from friends&family and/or test drives of new cars.
I purely love driving so comfort plays a big role to me I have driven 1000kms round trips on consecitive weekends and driven cross the country(ON-BC) and back and by far the best seats I have ever had in a car were the ones in my Nissan 300ZX's the 85 had basic cloth seats with a few minor features in the drivers they were very nice for long drives BUT the leather seats from my 86 300ZX were amazing! fully adjustable 5 point lumbar support fit like a glove(if you want them to) just truly well made seats! in fact my dad pulled them out of both cars before they went to scrap in the spring of last year he wants to put a set in his Jeep Eagle Wagon! and I intend to fit the leather set into my 7!

anyhow thats my .2 cents :P

Factory TII steats are a good compromise between comfort and support, also being factory it is the easiest route.

Don't get 240 seats unless you like the feeling of sitting on a bench seat.

Poke for TII Seats, just rember to get some that match your interior, it looks absolutely horrid otherwise... I have a Gray Interior that I Temporarly used Blue Cloth and Vinyl TII seats, not good.

Also, if your a "big guy" like myself. I found my Knees rubbing aginst the stearing wheel. The TII seats are a bit higher than the GXL, but I hear of spec Miata Guys gutting the seats to fit

wonder if Miata seats would fit?
