Is this a good prospect for an engine swap?

shipping will be like 400-500 bucks. if you plan on rebuilding the motor immediately then go for it. jspecs come longblock so they ALMOST have everything you need. stay within series BTW. if you have a s4, get a s4 jspec. s5, get an s5.

Are you saying that I should rebuild it right from the get-go? Is it not good to put and s5 engine with an s4 series car? I have an 86 (s4).

yes jspec motors are not known for having good compression, most likely it would only last a 10k? at best. it is recommended if you buy one to rebuild it first before installing, or your wasting your money.

as for staying in series, your an s4 so it's gonna be a million times easier for you if you keep it that way, or you'll have to change some wiring and deal with alot of headaches, it's not impossible just more difficult

Well, actualy, there ARE some good things about the S% motor (rear iron crack on S$, anyone?) If your current engine is a S4 T2, then, rebuild, and stick on most of the crap from the S5, but so it works with the S4 harness, etc. (imo, the mechanical OMP is better, if you rebuild the lines on it, for which there is a step by step how to on this site)

Also, here's a misc thing you can do. since the T2 engines rev to 7k rpm, what about getting a S4 N/A cluster, and adding a good (read: greddy/ trust, or HKS) boost gauge.
Purely asthetics through, and i dont know about the milage thing, might be unchangable, but I'm shure it should be possible, just some extra work for that "unique" touch.)

Current engine is an N/A. What would you guys suggest I do? Is there another way to get a T2 engine and transmission without buying a jspec. I know there is ebay, but they are normally really high in price and dishonest in there discriptions. I guess I could just keep this car as it is until it dies and then just buy a stock T2 and go from there. that would probably be the best thing to do. rebuilds are what $2000?
