Wink Going for Worst Gas Mileage (mpg) on a stock port NA! (I bet i've got the record!)

Hey everyone!
It looks (based upon the position of the fuel gauge) like My friend is about to get close to 10 mpg in his 1991 NA (i've been driving it with him -- he doesn't have a license yet) That HAS to be a record or something!

Aside from the glory of having attained the worst gas mileage possible (just about) on a stock port 1991 NA motor, I was also wondering how it could have used so much gas! The only things I can think of are...

1). messing around with the cooling system (Car idling for ~2-3 hours total on the tank?)
2). 17 year old (me) having fun on backroads about 1/2 of the time (the rest was 'spirited' street driving)

Any ideas? I was probably shifting at about 5,000 during the 'spirited' driving, and maybe 3000 - 3500 during 'normal' driving

I've got you guys beat
Manolis

Yeah, but shouldn't I be getting like at least 15mpg (without the idling?)

That'd mean we used 33% of the fuel at idle -- yikes!

o2 sensor can only change it by about 10%. so you might get 1mpg more after

Shoot, that's nothing. If I start and stop a lot I get about 9mpg in my 85 (stock). Of course if my car is warm ig actually gets pretty decent mileage, especially on the highway.

A while back with my 89NA in the winter I was getting about 9-11mpg. That was with just normal driving. The engine was about to go though.

if you go above 4,000 rpms your 5 and 6 ports open causing an increase of 25 hp. this can be a major factor in your cars gas consumpion.

The only reason MY car (the one he is talking about) is getting such low mileage is casue he drives it all the time and to just chug along in traffic he likes to be running 7000rpm in 1st gear instead of a resonable number in 3rd. Sonofabitch.

Hehe... more like 4500

The coolant seals are also going we think -- could this affect mileage?

You are only measuring by needle position? There is no way to tell the gas mileage that way and be accurate. Go put fill up the car and run it down about 50 miles. Refil and devide 50(or however many miles you went) by the number of gallons you had to put back in. Voila!

hey man i was only getting 190 miles out of a tank full, but the engine's rear apex blew out then. now that it has a new engine, i'm running WAY better miliage. Sometimes compression hurts.

You guys get terriable milage...my pp motor usualy got around 18-19mpg, with some serious spirited driving on occasions.

My n/a 90 gets around 25mpg, with 5-8 1st to 2nd gear 8k rpm runs. i just put on a Hi-6, so we'll see if it gets even better. CJ CJ

My 86NA gets 18 in town and 24 on the road. This is with normal old geezer style driving.

This is also with a fresh overhaul where new rotor housings and lapped end housings were used. The injectors were also cleaned and checked out by RC engineering. I am running a Bonez down pipe in place of the cats as well. When the original engine was there about 20 to 21 (on the highway) was all I could manage. The engine was very low on compression when I bought the car.
