i was just curious if there was any benifit to doing this maybe a 5hp gain or more backpresure that could help aftermarket exhaust systems on N/A's.... i would love to know thanks!!

 

well, its lighter...cheaper...and in my opinion it flows better. (that is, unless you have a TRUE dual set up with separate headers coming from the ports all the way to the bumper). in the single set up there's no Y-pipe to cause turbulance...

i've had mine for over 2 years now...Apexi N1...was only $450...sounds great, and the performance was definately noticeable. this was all on my 1991 n/a good luck with whatever you decide on...

Its a bit of a funny subject, the single does'nt flow beter than the twins becouse the twin 2.5's will always flow more than a single 3" but you have the weight saving.

I personly prefer the look of twins as it makes the car look more balanced at the rear and you dont have to modifiey the rear bumper to remove the exhaust cut out.

So its personal prefrance.

What makes you think the single is going to flow better for a Rx?

 

i have an N/A and if i went to a single i would get more backpressure and that could leave me with more options for custom exhaust... thats why....

Did you not read that 4 page thread about dual vs single exhaust? Its definately worth reading. And his question was just like so many I have seen lately. If it was something different, I would give a reply for it. But since theres some people here who are too damn lazy to search, Ill go over some of the main points.

Single exhaust will make more power than dual exhaust. One, it scavenges gas over a certain range very well. True dual does not scavange, and has a very even and progressive powerband. A tuned single system will have a narrower powerband(still very usably when tuned right), and will make more power where its tuned for than a true dual exhaust. It will also be quieter, from the exhaust pulses cancelling out each other. Some of this is negated by only having one muffler. This is aside from the obvious reasons of it beign cheaper, lighter and simpler.

 

i think i have decided on going single and have it all worked out i was just wonder if anybody has any pics!!! i would just love to see some and let me know what type of muffler are you useing.... thanks

 

how exactly do you "tune" an exhaust?

 

Change the pipe diameter, change the location of the collector, etc.

Thnx mazdaspeed7... Everything u say is correct and people dont seem to listen. Tomorow someone will ask the same question and another person will reply with dual is better because 2 2.5 pipes flow better than three. If it were that simple....Heres proof to mazdaspeeds fact.. GO to the rx7.com site and look at the apexi axausts.. U will notice that the single cat back will say... BEWHERE THIS SYSTEM IS DESIGNED FOR THE MOST POWER AND IS VERY LOUD... SO thier ya go... another thing mazdaspeed7 said I think is that one muff will be just as quiet as two or even quieter... I have a single muff on mine and is super quiet. Wish it was louder. Something to do with the gas velocity.. the faster it goes the more dampening the muffler can perform to a certain extent. Anyways.. Hope u learned alot in this small thread. It really should not grow much longer unless people just want to argue.

 

 

Sorry but it has been beaten to death.. When this forum goes through a good 5 star thread on Single VS Dual I think it gets saved. These more common things shouldnt get this much attention but it does because people might give someone the wrong idea that contridics what was said in a previous post wich means someone that knows the ansewer is going to have to go out of his way again to correct and or give the right ansewer...hence the reason for search.. But like I meant. If u have to ask then only a couple people that know should ansewer but that is not always the case...

I had a 3" Mandrel to 6" x 3" Maxflo muffler with a dumpy exhaust tip to stop carbon and exhaust crap going over my bumper.

My car was a TII LM and had no CAT cause we don't have to have them over here :P

It was loud but man did it flow.

Don't know about N/A's as we don't have them in NZ.
