Why about cast lexan? (too scratchy?) (I'm a moldmaker) |M| You have to be pretty thick to get the same ridgity that glass would have out of Lexan or a support system. Cast as a preformed piece rather than heat moulded might work, but then you still have the problem of any dirt scratching. |

yeah, lexan is better than plexi, but it's still a bitch with the scratches.

Man it seems that quite a few people have had glass moonroofs. Ever since we had this RX7 (11 years ago) it always had the sunroof, who knows if it factory or not but it is a direct bolt-on. I just installed it yesterday and it fit perfectly.
If anyone plans on producing more or need a sample moonroof I will be more than happy to use mine as a sample. ( PM me if interested) |

Like Mark said, the Pacific moonroof had exposed bolts, while the Finish Line model was sleek... The Finish Line roof was what came as an option on 10AE's, and the bronze tint matched the rest of the 10AE bronze glass... I've had a few Pacific glass tops, as well as 2 Finish Line tops... In fact I still have one of the 10AE tops *possibly* for sale if anyone is lookin... :D

There were two versions produced:
1. Saratoga tops, Saratoga New York ( Company has moved and lost track of the extrusion molds) 2. ASC/ Pacific T-Tops, since gone out of business. I am not sure who produced the ones sold under the "Finish Line" name Going price right now is 350-600 dollars depending on the buyer. I just sold one with the GXL I sent to Canada |

it's funny, today I was at a super pro glass shop(bringing them one of my molds to show them and pull parts) and was looking around, and there was this big strange curved mold, and I couldn't figure out what it was. HE said it was a mold for a windshield in a helicopter. (they make all kinds of things, carrera GT, lambo, Rolls parts, etc) Then he showed me a bunch of heli, airplane, and auto glass molds.
He said most are poly carbonates, instead of lexan, but he said some people still want the lexan. He said the polycarbonate holds up much better. Then I asked him about the FC sunroof idea. He said he will think about pros and cons, and anything that couldto let me know. He also said that he does know some people that make custom glass, but he doesn't know what's involved. But I did get the #, so I will find out in a day or two when I call the glass people.(I'm thinking tooling for glass is probably way out of my price leauge) I think that poly carbonate sunroofs might not be so bad... |
Lexan is polycarbonate. Lexan is the General Electric trade name for polycarbonate. GE's Margard has the scratch resistant coating over the Lexan.

I would like a poly windshield if it's more resistant to scratches than Lexan...

all lexan is poly-carbonate, but not all poly-carbonate is lexan..... yes, lexan is a poly, but there are many other types of poly-carbonate that are not the same make up of lexan. lexan has a kind of yellowish tint to it, even when it's brand new- no scratches. There are other types of poly that are water clear, not brittle, etc. I don't know all the ins and outs of the many types of PC, but I will find out the difference. (for instance I use poly-urethanes for most molds, but there are many many types of poly-urathanes=glues, paints, rubber, plastic, etc) |
