Getting my 13B Running again - Fuel Pump Issue

Long story short I picked up an FC parts car, and the prior owner claimed the fuel pump was the only thing keeping it from running. Well, it was sitting for quite a while according to him but "it ran on starting fluid" (not good!?) and when I pulled the pump the tank was filled with what looked like essentially varnish. Since I plan on putting this 13B into my 1st gen, I don't want to go through the hassle of putting a bunch of money into a new fuel pump that will essentially be worthless after I use it long enough to get her running and pulled from the car, nor do I want to go and clean the tank, replace lines, etc. I know the motor isn't seized as I took a small breaker bar and was able to turn it over with ease. Engine cranks with no issue, just doesn't fire at all.

Does anybody have any ideas on what I could do? I was thinking about buying a cheap inline fuel pump and trying to get it to run from that, though I'm not sure what exactly to look for in specs. The cheap cheap pumps on summit racing all specify for carb application (like 4psi @ 30gph), so I doubt they'd work. According to this thread, post #4 I'll need at least a 70psi, 78lph pump. Not cheap.

I'd like to get the motor running before I pull it out of the car.

Get a used pump, or borrow one from someone nearby (regional forum). Stick in a pail submerged in fuel, wire and hose up, add fuel, and use that as a temp fuel supply. Keep sparks away and do in a well ventilated area. Make sure to note which line goes to the engine (it's the one from the filter), don't forget the return line back to the pail (tank). You can also easily double check pump and fuel rail pressure this way. They're diff. methods and specs. btw

I thought the fuel pump had to be grounded to something? I did consider buying a cheapy $25 pump off of rock auto (link here... one of the economy ones?) just to use long enough to get her running until I found out my tank was essentially varnish.
