gear changing

i jus got this 1986 rx7 gxl, i wasnt very familiar witht the car when I bought it, because it was such a good deal i took it, its AT, and i dunno if this is right, but it switches gears at really hight rpms like 4500-5600, I was wondering if this its supposed to be like this, or sumthing wrong with the engine, or it could've been modded of some sort

I switch gears at about 7300 rpm...

The problem with what you have is that it has an automatic transmission. My car had that at one time too. Drop a 5spd in there and its a completely different car, no joke.

The auto tranny uses a vacuum servo... If you floor it, it will wrap out to somewhere around 6-7 before it shifts. If you're just babying it, it will shift anywhere from 2-4

However if it never shifts below 5000 rpm, you may be having a problem
