Gah! overheating all the sudden, need some help.

so i start her up as usual today and drive a couple blocks from my g/fs apt to my apt and i look down and my coolant temp gauge is at 75% (!). I immediatley cranked the heater and that got her down to about 50% then I shut off the engine. I noticed that the coolant purge tank was empty so I hobbled her to autozone with the heater on blast, to get some premix antifreeze/coolant and the temp never got above 50% (still over what it should be, about 25%). So I got the coolant, filled the purge tank back to the "full" line, slightly above actually. Then I started the car and watched the temp rise again I let it get a bit past 50% again and then turned the heater back on ( again back at 50%) and went outside and checked the level in the purge tank, it hadn't budged... WTF?? I also checked for any leaks on the ground and on my hoses and didn't find any. a while ago i was having a thing where the add coolant light would come on for a minute when the car was warming up but then go out when it got to near normal temp, the coolant level in the purge tank was always between min and full. I did search but the level of information availible was overwhelming and I haven't got that much time to figure out if my car is out of commision for a while or if I can fix it quickly. thanks in advance.

ok i went out and tried it again after it has cooled down all the way, the add coolant light was on and the temp went to 1/4, slightly more, then leveled off at 1/4 and the light went off, then back on again, I checked and it was not pulling coolant from the purge tank. also I tried taking the egi fuses out (the ones i normally take out when unflooding) and cranking it for a good 15 sec then i checked the purge tank and there was no bubbles... my purge tank does look pretty dirty on the inside tho, and the coolant looks a little murky, how would that happen??
