fusable link

I have been searching on the forum to try to figure out what is wrong with my car and I keep coming across people talking about fusable links. Can someone tell me what they are/do and where they are located.

My 82RX had a couple of fusible links.......but to the best of my knowledge the 87 and 87's I have do not have fusible links. Why do you ask?

That said, maybe my 87n/a should have had one where the black wire that feeds your ignition switch is located below the fuse box. It has a one socket connector there and a couple of years ago melted big time. I still know not why it melted.
