Funny Noise, Please Help, Need Opinions!!!
Okay Guys, here is the story:
I just put a cone filter on my N/A vert. Now I hear a crackling noise at full throttle that sounds like the fan is hitting the shroud (it is NOT, that is just the best description I can provide). I though a few times in the past I could hear something but my thinking is that the stock airbox muffled the sound. I also get a backfire at a redline upshift, every time now. I used to get is only about 50% of the time. The car still has great power but it doesn't seem to be as explosive as it used to be over 5K rpms. I think I know what it is but I am not going to cloud your minds with my thoughts. I would like to hear opinions from as many of you who have real ideas as possible. Also, if it is what I think it is can I remove and rebuild it or do I have to replace it? How can I test it to be sure??
Many thanks to all of you for your time,
Sam

Hmmm I get back fires all the time when shifting above 5500rpm nothing wrong with a little of that. well something must be hitting or rubbing something else. do you have the AFM tied down? If not you could have soething hitting it or the cone. Have you checked under the hood while the car was on? Try and look for the problem area like that.

Cone filter and AFM securely mounted with custom made aluminum backet. It sounds like rapid air gurgle our something other than mechanical. Like water sprinkled on a hot griddle...... I cannot make it make the sound without a high throttle load. Does anyone know of a wheel dyno that is available in CT??

No, I didn't mess with timing or A/F. I don't have the slightest idea how to time this thing either. I have the Haynes manual and a timing light so I will check, but it did not sounds like any detonation I ever heard.

well on a rotary detonation sometimes sounds like pop corn popping in the exhaust manifold...
Its the WOT that is throwing me if it is not knocking... I could see a slap from the thottle plates when you lift throttle, but that wouldn't sound like the fan tweaking into something.

M'kay. I will look into detonation this weekend. It does sound like popcorn popping. It is awful LOUD for that. I thought it might me the ACV malfunctioning. How would you know if that is not making the noise? Ever hear of one making a noise like that? I hear it blamed for the backfire in other posts. Anyone else wanna chime in here????
