fuel system problems!!!!!!HELP

hi my friend just got his first 86 gxl. we were putting a new thermostat in and went to start it and it would not fire up. (it sat for 4 hrs untill was last running.)
so we kept trying and it didnt work so we pulled of the main fuel line and tryed it than and no gas came out. it was very weird so we took out the fuel pump and tested it and it works fine. but when u turn the key to on the pump doesnt wine or make any sound(so it aint turning on)

does anybody know what would not allow the pump to turn on? i read in y manual to bridge that wire thing to test it and yes than it would make noise but didnt turn off. just kept on wining, which in the book eans that the system is not presurized.

so what is thwe cars problem, not being presurized or the pump not turning on.

thank you for any of your help im trying to tell my friend how good these cars are and now its not working at all!!

sorry for the shitty typing and it being so long

The fuel pump only runs when: 1. The key is held to the START position. 2. The key has been released from the START position and the engine is now runnning. 3. The fuel pump check connector is jumpered. That thing is a two socket plug, yellow in color if not covered with black shrink tubing, and is located near the right front strut tower. The key has to be in the ON position for the jumpered plug to run the pump.

The fuel pump WILL NOT run: 1. By just tuning the key to the ON position and the car not running.

The pump will also run if you take the air filter out, then gently move the flap inside the air fuel meter, with the key to the ON position.

It is puzzeling that you got no fuel out the fuel line when you took it off. Because you were holding the key to Start when trying to start the car. But......it would be the foremost fuel line that would have the pressure in it. That should be the one coming from the fuel filter which is about a foot below the brake booster. Follow the front fuel line and you should see it going to the fuel filter. That line should have some pressure on it when taken off just after having held the key to STart.
