Fuel Sock? The symptom not the problem

We found out during the 24 hours of LeMons this weekend that in our case, the fuel sock was only a symptom of a bigger problem, which was a rusty fuel tank.

We ran on a brand new fuel sock only to have fuel problems a few hours later. After flushing the fuel tank, the fuel sock had to be replaced again due to rust. That also did not complete fix the issue as straight line hesitation occurred as well. Only after then replacing the fuel filter did our fuel problems completely go away.

My suggestion if you have a fuel sock issue, flush your fuel tank of rust and replace your fuel filter or you will continue to have a fuel system issue.

Hope this helps!

We were actually at the race track so we had to flush it with water and then rinse with gas although I wouldn't recommend that. It was filthy though. You could see where we dumped the water the first time that it was brown colored from the rust deposits.

We did notice that the lower the gas got, the worse the hesitation problem was which was likely caused by the lower gas level sloshing up all of the rust where as a full tank wouldn't slosh around as much.

You should definitely consider having your tank flushed or replaced and replace the fuel sock and filter while you are at it. We didn't have any fuel problems from that point on.
