Fuel Pump Requirements
I'm getting my car put back together since it has been apart for close to 4 years now. I'm working on the fuel lines in the engine bay, but wanted to make sure I was getting fuel to the front of the car. After putting the fuel supply line in a bottle to catch the fuel, I put a battery in the car and turned the key to "on". The electrical systems came on, but I didn't hear anything from the rear of the car and I got no fuel coming through.
The engine harness up front isn't all hooked up, but is that required for the fuel pump? I figured that with the key in the "on" position, the pump would turn on.

That's a good idea. I'll have to do that since I'm at this point. Plus, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get some of the 6+ year old gas out of the tank. I think I'll do that before I install the new filter so I am not getting the old grime stuck in the new one.

Bumping my own old old thread...
Is the picture above showing the correct jumper for testing the pump? I installed the new pump but I am still not hearing anything from it when I turn the key on. Any thoughts?

You will NOT hear it with Key on.
you have to put Key on and jump that connector OR move the flapper valve on the AFM,and then the pump will turn on.
Yes that is the Connector.
By the way, there is a 14mm nut on the gas tank bottom, passenger side that is a Drain plug.
Personally I would just drain the tank there.(put a new crush washer on the plug before installing it again though).

With the key on and jumper installed, I hear nothing. I even hooked up the MAF sensor and moved the flapper to no avail. Back to the drawing board.

"The fuel pump gets voltage when the ECU sees rpm"
If you're still having this problem - bump the starter with the key for a half second. If that fuel pump doesn't turn on then, you have a problem. Moving the AFM flapper does not work on S5 and the yellow plugs don't always work either. Just bump the key to make the fuel pump hit.
