fuel gauage not working right
My fuel gauge has been messed up ever since i bought my car. It registers a full tank until I go through about 4 gallons of gas, then it goes straight to empty. From personal observations and from asking a few others i was wondering if it could be the fuel sender unit that is faulty. Or i thought i could have a hole in my float, but i checked that out and it seemed fine. Any advice on diagnosing this problem or possible solutions would be greatly appreciated. The car is a 1990 convertible.
Thanks in advance

had same problem
When I filled it up.. It went to FULL ... when it got down to half full.. then the needle hit 'E'
Solution.. pop the trunk
Unscrew the 4 screws to the cover
then Unscrew the 8 screws
Disconnect from the wall of the truck
pull the fuel pump
Replace the Float with a NEW one
My problem was solved.. I looked at the one i had and it didn't have the arm that moves across to judge the amount of gas in the tank..for some reason?? no matter.. it went to the trash can...:-)

I agree with Atpeak23... sender float.
But mind you that the FC fuel sender was never that great in the first place and is bottom weighted (moves less on the last half of the tank, than the first).
