Fuel filter replacement

Question Fuel filter replacement

Can someone point me in the direction of a thread that tells how to replace my fuel filter. I have no clue where its located or what i need to do

On another note, just replaced water pump/belts/hoses/clamps and no more over heating ( yay )

Inside the engine bay, drivers side fender, below the brake booster. Two 10mm nuts. I found it's easier to R&R, after removing the nuts, from the bottom. Just buy one from Autozone so you know what it looks like, go from there.

Fuel filter, that is probably the only thing I looked at and said I will wait on (it's in a weird spot, and i did replace it somewhat recently before). You should have best access to it if you remove the drivers side tire, jack up the front and remove it from the bottom, its located on the frame rail on drivers side right next to the firewall, you can't miss it. Two bolts like described above, and don't forget the two fuel lines.

Rather than pulling the fuse, or disconnecting the power connection to let the car run out of fuel when at idle, let the car sit overnight, then remove the filter. If not, you'll get soaked.

You will likely get soaked in any case. Even if there is no residual pressure in the fuel lines, there will be fuel in them that will run out when you disconnect the lines from the filter. So prepare for that. I didn't and ended up with gas all over the place. Not a good idea.

Also, be aware that there is also a filter, aka, fuel sock, attached to the fuel pump in the tank. In order to replace that, you need to remove the fuel pump. Argueably, it may be more important to replace the sock than the main filter since this filter is the first filter in the system and it likely would clog up well before the main filter.

I will just clean out my oil pan and use it to catch the gas. Since their is no pressure i'm guessing it just pours out the fuel line and not squirts??
I plan to pull the fuse AND let it sit for a day. We will see who gets soaked. Just in case i'm going to wear my shower cap so it doesn't get in my hair haha.
Any idea how much this fuel sock will run me? Once i get the fuel filter off can i just pull the fuel sock off or does it need some work?

The fuel filter is located outside the fuel tank, the fuel strainer (sock) is inside the fuel tank. Yes you can do both at the same time if you would like i guess.

Don't be scared of fuel spraying out. Do it the proper way, leave the car running and pull out the EGI fuse in the engine bay. Let the car die, the system is depressurized. Whatever fuel comes out can be caught with a rag.....

The fuel strainer can be found at local parts stores, make sure to get the one that actually looks like a small sock and not the one that looks like a box (o.e style which is not what you want). They usually can get you both so make sure to specify....

This is a list of what they have. Everything looks pretty much square-ish

I got the FS165. If i cant use this please let me know ASAP before it gets here.

Advance Auto Parts has it, part number FS123, Airtex pump strainer:

I can't visit the kragen website you showed me, but they also have the same part number, FS123 and also the FS165 you pointed out. Just pick one of those, the FS123 looks like the one I put in and the FS165 is just a bit shorter, but somewhat fatter it seems they both will work.

To show you the difference, look up the BOSCH strainer on their website, it's basically a giant BOX, this is what you have right now and don't want.

no thats fine, Bosch part number 68032 is what you don't want



The bosch is basically a box, what you have is a flat square it looks like, thats fine, its not a box, you will see when you take out your old one : )

True, I know alot of users have had the box give them fuel starvation problems (read this as, engine dies) when making hard turns (because of the way it cloggs) which is why I recommended the flat style one that every other car uses. I can't say from first hand experience, but just trying to set him in the right path.

It takes about 10 minutes to get the fuel pump out. You will need to flip back the trunk mat and probably pull back the drivers site trunk panel to unplug the pump as well.

Removing drivers tire/wheel would be far overkill.

Depressurize fuel system.
Remove fuel hose coming from primary fuel rail to the top of the fuel filter. As well as the top nut on the bracket, if you can get to it.
Jack up the front of the car.
Go down there with 10 and 12mm can't remember which.
Remove hose on the bottom of the filter, makes it easier than struggling with the bracket off the car.
Remove pump.
Install reverse of removal.
