Sell the car and get a Civic.

driving like you own a prius will save you the most gas for sure but no matter what you do the greatest cost of owning an rx7 is not the gas but the maintenance, guaranteed. Well unless you drive on the freeway all the time in which case buy another car because that's not at all the intended use of a rex.

As an Insight driver who regularly hypermiles, I find tricks like this irresponsible, dangerous and plain unnecessary.

FAS (Forced Auto Stop) has been implemented in some Insights (by owners) by essentially using a relay to cut out the ECM fuse. This kills the engine at driver request.

This also kills vacuum to the brake booster. While the vacuum reservoir on the booster is very large, it is only good for three to four hard pushes on the brake pedal before the ECM restarts the engine. With FAS this can't happen.

If the driver keys off the engine, that's even worse. At that point ABS, power steering and power brakes are now dead (once vacuum for the brakes runs out). While I don't believe in ABS as a safety measure for those who know how to drive, it clearly is a safety system for the average driver.

Forcing the engine off is also totally pointless. Like any modern EFI system, the Insight totally cuts fuel during decel or engine braking. In addition, at speeds over 40, just shifting into neutral causes the instant FCD (Fuel Consumption Display) to move to infinity since the engine uses such little fuel at idle. Saving by shutting the engine off won't be anything more then a marginal gain. And of course, an engine should NEVER be shut off or shifted into neutral on the way down a hill.

For the record I easily beat the EPA mileage of the Insight without many of these hypermiling tricks. Just driving smoothly, anticipating traffic and knowing how to take advantage of lean burn and the hybrid system is all that's necessary.

The FC's EFI system, while not exactly modern, still cuts fuel totally on decel.

I also don't recommend putting the RE92s on an FC. While they are excellent low rolling resistance tires, putting them on a vehicle like the FC is just plain dangerous. Especially if you over inflate. They are by no means a performance tire and would degrade the handling and braking of a heavy (compared to an Insight) car like the FC to a dangerous level.

NO

1- you are now sucking **** into the fuel lines slowing the flow of fuel and clogging your filter - nothing about that is good

2- E-V-A-P-O-R-A-T-I-O-N
yea more air in the tank = more evaporation so you are now wasting fuel without even using it.. the damn car is only 2700 lbs, loosing weight is barely going to help, especially less than 100 lbs in fuel...
I try to keep mine about 1/2 tank although my gas gauge doesn't really read properly (dunno dont care) but if your fuel / air ratio is leaning towards the fuel side it will slow your evap rate
plus what if, just what if... never know when you are gonna run out of your little supply and be stuck cause you ran out, or the price jumped 30 cent and you could have had a full tank at 3.99 but now your paying 4.05 for another quick 5 gal, thats just dumb math
