Frustration: Can't find a machine shop

I'm in the middle of getting a Miata gearset put into my FC case for my track car. All is well, except finding someone to turn down the input shaft. Got all new bearing seat for the transmission as well as a new blocking ring for 5th gear (old one was cracked...pretty common it seems).

Trying to find a machine shop to do this work has been a bit of a nightmare. I know a few people who have access to equipment, but none of them have a lathe that is large enough to accept the input shaft. I've called and went by about 3 dozen machine shops in the area. Most won't even talk to me because I'm not a business. The one's that will refuse to do work on anything that goes on a car.

I was a big desperate yesterday and told the guy its a part to a machine (transmission for a custom milling machine). But the guy took one look at it and turned me out the door.

Any advice guys? I've never had this much trouble getting something done on this car...

Bring it up to Summit Point Raceway. Buddy of mine (Molotovman) got his done up there. Shaft milled and they rebuilt it.

Or you can ship the shaft out to MazdaTrix and they'll do it up for like $90. That's what they quoted me last year.

Eek, Summit Point is a bit of a drive..
It looks like I'll probably send it off to Mazdatrix. Thanks for the info!

Talk to performance shops in your area. If you get lucky you'll find one that does a lot of custom work which means they know a machinist that specializes in automotive stuff. Thats how most of my customers find me.

I guarantee that they have the a lahte big enough but the reason they would turn you away is that most drive line material is machined and then hardened and tempered with makes it a nightmare to work with. i'm not saying it can't be done but most places don't stock the inserts to cut hardened material and if they ordered them in they wouldn't make any profit from just one job.
