front electric fan

ok so i had my cooling fan light come on and i didnt even know i had an electric fan in front of the radiator before...didnt see it with all the plastic covers. anyways i was able to get all the plastic off and test the fan motor itself which seems to be working fine.

i was going to try to follow the wires that fan is on back to the sensor and then check the sensor but i cant...the 2 wires on the fan go into this big wrapped line of wires and its impossible to find.

anyone know where the sensor is or anything else i should check before i just hook it up to run anytime the car is on...?

The sensor is on the t-stat housing/ water pump housing area, behind the alt...

If there is a plug at the fan (I don't have this setup on my car, but there HAS to be a plug you can disconnect somewhere), pull it off and check for voltage on the fan's power wire (harness side), to ground, when the fan should be running. No voltage=sensor or wiring problem (check the fuse, also). Voltage= perhaps bad fan motor...

There's gotta be some FSM steps for troubleshooting also...

i know that the fan doesnt turn on when its supposed to...i have gotten out to check when the fan light came on. the motor has connectivity so thats good...im assuming its either wiring or sensor.

i dont get voltage to the fan when its supposed to be on because i checked that too.

ill find the sensor and see if there is connectivity between the ends of the wires to see if those are good.

if not i guess i can assume that its the sensor. im pretty sure they are pretty cheap to replace from autozone or something so its not a big deal.

OH...and im going to check the FSM now so ill follow those troubleshooting steps tonight when i get home from work.

The sensor is on the thermostat housing and has a green/black wire going to it. IF that wire is disconnected, the fan should come on.

There is a *Fan Control Unit* and it is inside the car. It has a plastic cover, grey in color and is in the passengers foot area up...fwd.. far right. That unit is probably good

The Fan Relay is the third one over to the left of centerline. The fan relay is probably not there or bad. Got me. You can see the aux fan schematic in the series five fsm in the Cooling Section. Maybe even in the series four fsm. Got me.

That fan should not come on until the water temp is pretty hot. Over 200 degrees I think. OR if the green/black wire is disconnected from the sensor on the thermostat housing.

ill just remove that wire and see if the fan comes on. that will tell me if all the wiring is good and its just the sensor....should be an easy fix. i just printed out some of the troubleshooting from the FSM. when i get home ill get to working on some of this stuff.
