Freebie: Stock intake mod

So I was looking and I can't seem to find how the stock intake gets fresh air I like stock look so I got to work thinking of how to improve.

I did measure everything out for ya guys but I lost the paper, if I find I'll post it up.

How to improve this mod? Add a scoop to push up some air to this part that you cut, I'll do that later once I figure out a good method to do so.

Click the pics for bigger view, should be self explanatory.

No reason to flame me guys, this takes 10 mins and does make a diff it's also free. I went on the freeway and drove through the city before to take my 7 to the mazda dealer and it does feel different, I got a auto and stepping on the throttle shifts quicker, quick throttle blips also seem to respond quicker, as if the hood was poped.

Currently thinking up plans for alil scoop to push more air up there, not saying it'd be ram air or anything but I'm unsure how how much air actually is able to be sucked through there, I don't know how well air goes through the rad.

Comments are welcome

so you are trying to get air in from the radiator section????

You know every time you stop you will be dumping hot air into your intake???

Icemark, I put some thought into this I've felt up there after running the car hard and hot as hell, all I feel is nice cold air sucked through there, though I did feel the rad heat I don't think its much as the clutch fan is pulling air.

Also normally that area of the hood feels hotter after freeway runs, I felt it and on the side of the intake was cooler than the other side (not further back I know thats always hotter)

Anyways I plan to think up a lil scoop that'll go near the grill.

Also icemark, where does the stock intake get the air from? As far as I can tell air it sucks would be coming from the hood latch area thats alil open, and maybe to the side of the headlamps, I don't see where else air would pull from otherwise, also most air around there would still be from near the rad.

The more twists and bends you have on your intake, the more resistance you add and could possibly end up causing rough air to enter the intake.
I like the "Heater duct + cone K&N filter" idea of re-routing it under the head-light

Its just the stock intake with a slot cut into the area the hood closes the intake off too.

With alittle scoop, it'd promise more air to be directed into that area, or you could maybe put a little heater vent there

That duct brings air to the radiator. I'd think that by removing it, you will be slightly reducing airflow to the rad.

Have you logged intake temp changes with this setup? What's the result?

As Icemark mentioned, that area gets very hot when the car is stationary. The oil cooler sheds a lot of heat in front of the radiator, which is where your air from now.

Aaron cake I was thinking bout that so I made the hole not that big at all, the air should go to the rad and the engine should beable to more freely suck air with the stock intake, seems to work.

I was driving in bumper to bumper traffic after getting my seven from mazda (mm new belts)

I didn't see anything wrong when just idling or going slow.

I got the stock coolant temp setup, it's at the same place it always rises too (Prolly should get a new rad and do a good coolent flush as it was never changed in 8 years and I did a kinda poor job) my coolent needle always sits flat after the car warms up, I dont think the hole that size can do any damage with the cooling system when I removed that piece I did a bit of thinking about it.
