Free Engine!!??

I have a friend that can get a deal on an engine and tranny buy. They both have around 46,000 miles on them. He needs the tranny for his daily driver, and the engine is neede for his '90 that he wants to sell. I have a '91 w/130,000 miles on it. It runs strong and I am not worried about it. BUT he would like me to have the engine w/46k on it and put mine in the car that he wants to sell. Is it worth the hassle and the gamble that the engine will run strong? That is if it hasnt been sitting for a long period of time. Any thoughts on this?

I'd say do the swap. If the engine he wants to give you has low miles and wasnt beat then it will only benifit you. You might want to do a compression check on both your engine and the one he has and compare the numbers. That will atleast give you some idea of the condition of the engine. Also check all the signs of wear in the doner car. Like gas in the oil, oil in the coolant.

After the compression check, remove the exhaust manifold on both engines, and (using a mechanics mirror and flashlight if you have to) inspect eh rotors, apex seals and what you can see of the housings.

then, remove the oil pan on the lower milage engine, look for scorching on the aluminum rotor housings, if the bottom of the housings are black, or dark, then the engine has been overheated.

If it has been overheated, check yours.

Who knows maybe yous has been too.

Make a chart of things that are wrong/right with both engines.
list everything from mechanical stability to physical condition.

Then , after its all said and done, delete the items on the list that BOTH engines have the same "score" on.

what you are left with should be a obvious picture of which engine to go with.

MAKE SURE you do that compression test.

Hook a starter the the new engine/tranny combo and turn it over to try and match the test you'll do on your other engine thats in your car.

Also...
check the plugs for oil.
check the intake system for carbon
check for long time oil leaks.

I could go on, but others will reply with more suggestions.

My opinion (for what it's worth): If it ain't broke....don't fix it! If your car runs great then I would not change the engine.
