Forced into making homemade short shifter.

So I was going to install a new shift **** on my car. My old one did not wanna come off. I put a lot of pressure into it and then *SNAP*.

The top part of the shifter breaks free and all I have left is the short nub. I had alwayas wanted to do this mod but never did. But looks like I have to now. I'm going to the store later to exchange shift ***** and get one that will work better.

Question: For those that have done this mod, did you use the stock shift boot? It seems a bit to big but it may work.

Damn, I just posted how to do that about a week or so ago, now can't remember the thread. Someone was looking for a short-throw shifter, and I left details of how to make the stock one shorter. As I recall, I got laughed out of the thread. But, hey, f*ck 'em, it worked well for me.

Let me try digging this up through the search function. I'll reply if I find anything.

Yes, I used the stock shift boot. It's too tall, really, but it does fit nicely if you kinda let the majority of it sit in the hole around the stick. Sorry, no pics. DAMN I hate not having my car here....

isnt it different, like a real short shifter has the bottom going farther so the throw is shorter, not the shift stick itself.
I wonder how the feel between the two is, maybe cut the inch or so off of a short shifter ;-)
short throw, shorter shift stick
for people with short dicks

Dave Gibson (fc3s.org) had a different way of doing it, but the results were the same. He posted a picture of the finished product.

BTW, Supergoat, I don't know what type of cement you're using, but I wouldn't try it, whatever it is. The reason I did this to mine in the first place was because it came apart. Apparently the previous owner had it come apart on him, and he used some JB Weld to put the pieces back together.

It probably held for quite some time. Until about two months after I got, anyway. I was doing a 1-2 shift while I was trying to show up some car, forgot what it was. The shift **** and upper part of the shifter came off in my hand. Scared the **** out of me. Bottom line is, if you intend to shift your car hard, don't use that shifter again. Either mod it like I did, weld it back stock height, use another shifter from the junkyard, or spiff the $200+ for a Mazdatrix shifter. A shifter that comes out in your hand is not a good thing, especially at a really inopportune moment.

I being cheep, and having an extra laying around...just took a portable band saw, cut the shifter about an 1" below the threads. Right before it starts to get large. Then cut off all the metal with rubber inside of it. Took off a little bit off of the bottom part of the shifter, and welded it back together. I like the feel of it. To me, the stock shifter hight was just a little to high, and this fixed it. I'll post some pics of the finished product sometime soon. Then i stuck my stock FD shift **** on it. Now, it realy feels nice. CJ

Thats the way I did mine, instead of just pulling it apart.

I pulled mine apart too. It actually does make the throw a little shorter because the farther you get away from the pivot, the wider the distance is between shifts. Hmmm, I know there are better words n **** to explain but I just woke up and can't think right now. But ya, it is a little shorter. And even if it wasn't, how is it worth buying a $250+ shifter that will take what, 0.00001 seconds off you 1/4 mile time.
