well I got the nut off my flywheel but now I cant get the flywheel off. I tried just using a prybar like the haynes manual said but no luck so I got a puller and the friggin thing busted. Now what, can I use a slide hammer puller I dont think its a good idea but its the only way I see it coming off. any suggestions would be awesome. thanks

 

Try using a rubber mallet. Hammer will suffice.

when i took the flywheel off my engine i had the same problem. slide hammer, puller, prybar, etc. nothing worked. i took it to a local shop (brakes and such) and they heated it up and used a puller i borrowed (mac tools cost 450) and they got it off with just a little trouble. they heated the flywheel and used the puller and a 3 pound hammer to remove it...took them like 5 minutes and only cost me 20 bucks

Slide hammer puller definitely. I used it twice on S5 TurboII motors and it worked great both times. Here's what you do:

Get the puller, it should have a few bolt holes for it, go to the store and get a few good length Grade 8 bolts and washers. Also buy (if you don't have one laying around) a piece of 3/8" or larger steel (or metal, I used aluminum) disc, about the same diameter of the flywheel nut.

Put the flywheel nut on loosely (so the flywheel can move a little when it comes loose, but not fly off and hit you). Put the metal disc over the flywheel nut and bolt the puller up to it. Now insert the slide hammer part (which should consist of a slide hammer and a threaded rod that you can use to put some pressure on the steel disc. Tighten it up decent (not super tight, the point is NOT to use it like a twist puller), just tight enough to make sure it's got some good pressure on it. Now give it a few whacks with the slide hammer.

Twist the threaded rod some more to tighten it, and give it a few more whacks. Tighten it some more, yank on it again, tighten it, yank it, tighten it, yank it.. eventually it'll shoot out.

 

take a rubber mallet and give it a few good hits in the 12, 3, 6, 9 oclock positions, aim for the bolts holes for the pressure plate. .. i did it today and it popped out fine

 

yeah on the side of the exhuast ports you can hit the back of the flywheel pretty good, use some penetrating oil, and hit it with a dead blow hammer I use a soft brass one so it didn't damage the flywheel....or you could just go all out and get a racing beat flywheel puller

Dude, just grab a 4 lb hand held sledge and whack it a few times around the perimeter. Make sure you thread the nut on a bit so it doesn't come flying off.

Works like a CHARM (REALLY REALLY REALLY easy -- I spent 4 hours trying with a puller before I tried this, which took 4 hits and ~35 seconds).

Just hit it square on, it won't damage anything.

Exactly........use a heavy hammer like a machinist hammer. They are cheap and can found everywhere. The object is to create a harmonic vibration that will break it loose from the taper that is fits on. It works every time with little or no problem.

U can use the grade 8 bolts with the flywheel puller but there are a couple of thinds you want to consider.
If the bolts pull out the flywheel is pretty much a done deal. I would us something like a dead blow hammer. Don't hit the back of it unless you can hit it evenly all the way around because you could get it stuck on there at a really ackward angle which would make things worse. Use something like PB blaster from a local hard ware store(that stuff works great but its kind of pricey).
When you get it off you might want to invest in some anti-sieze so that you dont have to go through this again.

Instead of using a rubber mallet (they bounce right off) or a metal headed sledge (that will damage your flywheel) try using a dead blow hammer. Sometimes they are made of lead (it will not dent or scratch any other metal) or the one I have is hard rubber around a metal weight.

The last time I had trouble with a flywheel I heated it up around the e-shaft with a torch and had it off with 5 VERY hard hits from the dead blow hammer.
