It's not about the size of the impact. You could have a 6" drive impact and it wouldn't make a difference if you don't have the pressure or volume from the compressor.

I've used 3/8" drive Dewalt 18v impacts with great effect, just not on the flywheel nut.

I'd go with more heat if I were you, OP.

size generally does matter with impacts, of course with everything low pressure will bring the power down but equally on any size.

but if you're going to take a nut off and had the choice of a 1/2" and 3/4" and space was not an issue which impact would you choose? generally speaking the larger one would get it off easier, not with more effort than the smaller impact.

basically what i'm saying is the dewalt has a vagina.

When if I have a choice I'd obviously take air over battery, but when you're working without air in a tent in Iraq, installing armor kits on trucks that should have been taken off the road years ago...well, you work with what you got...which seems to relate to what the OP is going through, not having air and having to work with what he's got.

Instead of cutting it with a chisel, can't you just borrow an air impact and an "air pig" tank of air for a few minutes?

With a decent air gun, it will come off in a few seconds. Or someone you know must have a small compressor. Even a small compressor will run a big gun for a few seconds at a time, then recharge, then repeat. Or, run the engine down to a local truck mechanic with a 6 pack of beer and have him/her spin it off.

I just hate seeing people take the absolutely hardest route for a simple task accomplished with the correct tool.

Just get a huge cheater pipe on a breaker bar. I countered the force by drilling a piece of angle iron (about four foot long) I had laying around to bolt up to a couple of the bell housing bolts. Did it on the garage floor. I'm guessing you already have the socket, which is the key piece.

You don't cut the nut off with a hammer and chisel. What you do is cut a notch into the nut then drive it counterclockwise with the chisel and hammer.

My bad on the last reply. Attach angle iron (counter to force) to flywheel.

I used a piece of angle iron bolted to the flywheel and a 3/4" drive breaker bar with the handle from my floor jack slipped over it. With 5 feet of cheater bar I've never had a problem.

Dont use an extended breaker bar. You will just end up breaking something or getting hurt! Dont go out and buy a cheap compressor for i one time use. Any small grarge with the proper tools will do it for a lil of nothing. Give someone else 20 bucks and cut your lose in time and when you can afford to get a compressor get a good one that will last. I never have had any problem with any nut frozen up with the correct tools. I have never needed heat on that nut with just my snapon 1/2 drive gun. I got a cheap 3/4 drive that wont take a lugnut off. lol

Nothing wrong with extending a breaker bar. Wear safety glasses and use quality tools.

Not everyone has access to air tools, and they're just not necessary for this.

Its finally off. neigbor had an air compressor out I asked if I can hook my impact up too it. took it off with ease. now just have to get him to pull it out again so I can get the ****** back on. I thought I'd just put it on by hand, but seems its just as hard to get the flywheel snuged down as it is to get the basterd off. Is there a trick to gettting the flywheel all the way back or what? Lube??

I use a 1 inch breaker bar/socket with a 4 foot long pipe. I must have taken at least 30 off and at least 20 back on. ~ 10 in the car. NEVER had a problem with the flywheel stoper and the angle Iron braket I made to hold the engine.

Im fighting the urge to make mom or vaj comments....

i have a few tricks that i find work very well.

1. hit it foward for a few seconds and than reverese with your electric impact gun

2. use a wobble extension, sometimes this makes the hammering effect a little more powerful

O god this thread worries me a little. I have removed quite a few flywheel nuts before with the engine out of the car and using air tools, always a piece of cake. But as of today i dropped a auto trans and about to tackle removing the fw nut while the engine is still in the car for the first time. Big problem is i have zero air tools this time around.

Sounds like i shouldnt even attempt to remove it without air tools first. Now after i break this nut loose i have a question for anyone who has removed an auto flywheel/cw before. I know on the manual fw you just put the nut back on loose and slam the fw with a diesel hammer to make it pop. But since the auto fw is so thin and weak will it work just as well slamming the fw with a hammer? Or do i need to put a puller on there to build pressure then slam it? Just looking for ANY tips that can make this swap easier. Thanks

MIne was also stuck as hell. Haven't read if you got it off, but I bolted my engine to a frame of 2x4 planks on the floor in lack of else, and bolted it to it with the engine mounts. Then I stood over the engine and held it so the frame wouldn't tip over, and a friend stood and pushed hard down with his feet (ie bending his knees and then giving it hell) with a 6 foot long rod on the MAzdatrix 52mm wrench.

Now that got it off :P
