Flooring Gas to keep alive, idle bouncing*URGENT COLD OUTSIDE HELP*

1986 GXL n/a, streetported, no emmissions/ac, ports pinned open, straight piped.

Due to low voltage issues at idle, (12v). 13 while driving. I had the alternator rebuilt for 90a, new belts, starter, battery terminal posts, grounds cleaned.

I replaced the battery last night, with a red top optimum. Started her up, and everything seemed fine.

Drove 5 blocks and the car died.

It will start up fine"ish", but you have to put the petal to the floor to keep the idles from dropping below 500rpms. When your foots to the floor the idle bounces anywhere from 500 to 3000, completely randomly, and wont hold a steady rpm. I find it weird this started happeneing as soon as i put in a new battery, now I threw in the old battery and its doing the same thing.

Notes: It's -32 right now... -40 with the wind chill. brrrrrr... *shivers* lol, really sucked when the car died, swapping in the extra battery from my trunk and trying to pull fuses in the middle of the road.

I also sprayed wd40 on a few things. before this happened, pulled out some fuses for things i didn't use, like antenna, sunroof, and put dome fuse back in.

All fuses are back in now. umm.. could it be my tps, map sensor, or are my gass lines frozen. which would be weird, since i was in a heated garage working on the car before i left.

oh.. and also, within the past 2 weeks if i let my car idle for more than 5 mins, it will die. But, the battery will be fine, and it'll start right back up.

Also at start up in this weather, after about a minute of cold start, the speed signal sensor warning will start beeping every second continiously till you start driving.
And yesterday, i got 5 continious beeps at start up, and then followed by a slight pause then the constant beep every second, till driving.

I also have a parts car that same year/model. so if its something simple i can try swapping, let me know.

Thanks,

what exactly did you remove when you did emissions removal? A lot of that stuff affects idle to an extent... your blockoff plates could be causing a vacuum leak as well

nothing, it was done about 6 years ago, when the engine was rebuilt. So it was about 2 years before i had the car. Its kind of weird that the vac leak would just spring up now if thats the case, could the fuel lines be frozen? after just a few mins in the cold? map sensor? tps? vac line? ack. i dont know where to start.

It could be a lot of things,But start by checking the fuel pressure and that there are no disconected wires or loose air hoses, mass air flow sensor ,etc... And also the wd40 does not mix with electrical, I learn that the hard way,So make sure its dry!{no wd40}

Cars fine now

I dont know what it was. Which sucks, but all i did was pick up some fuel system dryer, and tighten the battery terminals.

1 hour after adding the dryer, i started it up and the same thing happened. I took some vids i'll be posting.

after pissing around for a while making sure no lines/wires were loose for about four hours or longer, i started it up, and the cold start kicked in, and after making its way down to proper idle after about two mins, i took it for a 15 min test drive, and everything seemed fine.
Could loose battery terminals do this? or condensation froming when i innitially parked the car in the warm garage?

Either way.. its going to be -52 celcius with the wind chill tonight and -32 tonight, so hopefully I dont get stranded again. And i also hope plugging my block heater in outside is enough to start her up in the morning. (It has been so far)

wish me luck!

loose terminals will absolutely ******* do that. I have a very interesting story to go along with that.

I was in Texas in '01. My car had been dented in the fender and the pop up lights owuld not go back down. For some reason it kept draining the batter so I kept disconnecting the terminals so it wouldnt do it. Totally stupid. All I had to do was pull the retractor fuse. Anyways I was driving up the street and a cop had passed me and I had no insurance. I hit a bump and the car totally died. NOTHING. No lights, nothing, it totally shutoff. I saw him turn around down the street and I ran out, plugged the terminal back up and drove off around the 90 degree turn and punched it. Cop wanted to help but I didnt want to get caught with no insurance.

When he rounded the corned he could see that I was running and turned his lights on. He was about 3/4 mile back. I about **** my pants. I got on the main street from the neighborhood and about a 1/4 mile later was on i-35w hoping he didnt see me. I see the lights again as he was on the on ramp after me.

About this time Im thinking I am totally fucked now, nervous as hell, i was between cars and he passed me and by the time he realised it I had gotten off an exit.

I made it to the movies to see oceans 11 and nearly **** my pants just seeing a security guard. So yes, in short a terminal coming loose can shut the whole car off.
