filler neck leak

Just wanted to see if you guys think this is safe. The plastic part between the filler neck and the filler cap has a tiny leak in it. Instead of hunting one down or buying a new one, I was wondering if I could just use some rtv to patch it up. Its only a pinhole size leak but it still sucks to be leaking coolant. Also, I know bad bushings will cause the shifter to be loose, but can they fail to the point where it seems the shifter wants to jump out of the tranny.

Better to replace the filler neck thingy. Wouldn't hurt to try to RTV it, but remembered that the cooling sys pressurizes and that the RTV may get 'blown' out. Patch it, take it for a drive and then see if the RTV is still in place. Whatever floats your boat.

As for the shifter, check how tight the bolts are that are holding it to the tranny. You'll have to pull out the trim pieces to get down there.

Amur,
I am hoping the rtv route works and holds, because a new filler deal is 30 bucks, or in other words, half a new kumho mx I am going to remove the boot, trim, etc. later this week so I will look at all the bolts when I do that. I am pretty sure the bushings need replacing though. Is it mazdatrix that sells the bushing kit?

yeah, you guys are likely right. I am just a cheap bastard and wanted to fix it with something I already have around the house. With all the pressure in the cooling system the hole/crack will likely just get bigger over time anyway. Better to fix it now I guess.

Well, the bottom of that plastic peice has a rubber O-ring in it. Try replacing that first.

In an emergency - Bondo Marine Epoxy Stick.
It will get you back on the road while the replacements ship.

I have repaired a '91 thermostat neck, a '91 radiator plastic top tank, and an '87 water pump housing with that stuff.

The pump housing was still holding a year later when I sold the '87.
