Few Tech Questions and Problems.

Hi guys, new to the forums and I trust you guys will be alot of help.

I have a 88 RX7 GXL. The thing goes through gas like crazy. I don't drive it too hard, and i get about 280Km to the tank, yes thats right no turbo and 280km to a tank. Is this normal or not? If not, what could be the problem? I've changed the plugs, the wires, and the air filter. Don't know what else i can do...

2nd problem. When at idle and I rev up the rpms to anywhere from 1200-2900rpm and hold it there, the car starts surging, like not wanting to die, but the rpm jumps down/up 200-300 rpm and it keeps doing it..

(so if i have it at 1500, it goes down to 1200 then back up to 1500, goes down, then up down up down up... you get the idea) Doesn't look like i have a vaccum problem, but you guys would know better.

I also didn't pass aircare cause of idle, now i'm thinkin it might have something to do with this reving problem.

also the car is supposed to have 148 hp? it doesn't seem like it would... maybe i'm used to faster cars???

ok last question of the night... I have a crumbled drivers side fender, and i wanna replace it... do you guys know if the fender is just a bolt on bolt off kind of a job or is it more then that on these cars?

thanks alot in advance guys.

the RPM problem sounds like TPS (throttle positioning sensor) being misadjusted. try a search for TPS adjust or something like that and you can get all sorts of links to pages that explain how to do that

the fender is a bolt on/off deal

the poor gas mileage could be from several things. changing O2 sensor will help some, but it sounds like yours is really bad. many 2nd gens have leaky fuel injectors, RC engineering will clean/blueprint them pretty cheap. or it could be other problems. gas mileage will drop when the compression starts getting bad in the engine. on my old car when my engine was on its way out i was getting about 10mpg, then rebuilt it and it doubled.

do you know what the HC readings were from the inspection? that might help a little

good luck!

I agree. Change the O2 sensor, and reset the TPS. Both easy fixes.

also, check for intake leaks, those can sometimes cause RPM surges

The car should be pulling mid 16's in the 1/4 mile... Make sure to get everything tuned nicely so it can run like it did back in '88

Get some BPU mods and you may break into the 15's with good driving... good enough to beat most of the cocky Civic and old Mustang owners out there

(DUH, not saying ALL Civic or Mustang drivers are cocky so don't flame)

well, thanks to you all... I'll try changing those and see what happens...

can you guys remember the link for the tps reset or adjustment off hand? and is it a "do it yourself" kinda deal?

and Dre _2000... hehe, yea, 15's would be ok.. lol

i've owned 6 diff cars this year and they've all gone under 15's, so maybe thats why this feels a bit slower... but it handles good..

Just for your info, here's what i've had and ran...

91 and 92 Thunderbird Supercoupe - both ran 14.7
92 Stealth R/T TT - 13.7
90 Talon TSi AWD - 13.9
94 Trans Am LT-1 6spd 13.9

unbolt your exhaust and just run it straight from the header and see how it runs it will be loud as ****! but it will run good! I did that once to my old SE before it was turbo just to see how it would run and boy did it feel good.... the only problem was I woke the dead... lol! If everyone hasnt noticed i did a lot of "experiments" with my old 88 SE. haha! Then i got an 86 GXL and it had low low low compression already and i wanted to see how long the car would last before i blew it... funny, i blew the same day i got it... hahaha
