A few suspension related sort of questions

In my base 87, I've developed a new problem in regards to turning left. Whenever I make a slight left turn, like around a curve or just correcting on the road, my steering wheel rattles, and it rattles through the whole turn. Sharper left turns do nothing, except for when I'm just starting to make them, right turns don't do anything either.

My first thought was low P/S fluid, but I think that would affect left and right steering, and be more sluggish.

Also, my right rear tire makes a quiet squeaking noise, and it's only noticable in light traffic with the windows down. I think it is a bearing that's starting to go. Ideas?

Thanks.

Ummmmmm...... You're thinking of a front wheel drive car i think my man..... RX's dont have CV joints up front....

As for the steering wheel shake... Something in one of the front wheels or steering linkage...

one of three things 1) tie rod ends 2) ball Joints 3) tire has a buldge it in

Jack the car up on one side and then do the following:

Spin the tire and eyball it as it spins, look for buldges or uneven tread wear.

Tie rod ends... grab the tire at 3:00 and 9:00 and try to turn it back and forth.. (helps to have somebody do this and YOU eyeball the tie rod end) if there is slop on it, or you actually see the tie rod end move.. bad tie rod end..

Ball joints Grab the tire at the top and the bottom, try to move it in and out.. if there is slop, bad ball joint.. you may have to use a pry bar and put some fore between the spindle and the a-arm to really see if the ball joint is bad..

If NEITHER the ball joint of the tire rod end is bad, but the wheels still has slop in it.. bad front wheel bearing.. (if there is like a mm of movement.., like just a tick, thats OK)

Do this for both front wheels

Have your tire balances if nothing else is obvious

Noise from the rear wheel.. could be a bearing... but i'd check your brakes... could be a squealer on the brake pads telling you that they are low and need replaced.

Holy crap, they were fairly cheap (I don't remember the price exactly, maybe $40 each?) and I replaced them myself; all it takes is 2 bolts holding it to the control arm, and one pinch bolt holding it to the steering knuckle. This is for my S4, I read it's different for S5.

Yeah... the s4 ball joints are replaceable... they just bolt on with two nuts..

the s5's are actually machined into the end of the A-arm.. gotta ge a whole new arm... they ARE replaceable... but you'd have to have a press and tools (which i have) BUT... nobody sells the actualy JOINT!!!!!!
