Fenders S4 vs S5

On every FC I have ever had or worked on, I never noticed any difference in the amount of flare that they have. They all have looked the same to me.

But someone recently claimed that the S5 fenders are flared out more than the S4 fenders.

Of course I was/am extremely skeptical of this, but maybe someone can confirm this one way or the other that has both a S4 and a S5.

Did some searching, and apparently everyone says they are the same, except for the trim and holes. It's ironic Mark would bring this up. When I purchased my '89TII new, and went to pick it up, it was sitting alongside my '88TII I was trading in, and I remarked to the salesman how the '89 looked wider and the fenders seemed to flair out more. It is probably just the spoiler and side skirts that give that impression.
Anybody got fenders to put side by side and examine?

They'd better be the same, I replaced my crushed driver's side fender with one from an 87 T2. Nobody has said to me "hey your fender is wider on this side."

Other than mounting holes, there is no discernable differene.

There IS a minor difference between s4 and s5 fenders. I know this because I not only put an s4 fender on my s5 vert, but I also installed the stock s5 ground effects on it.

The s5 fender, where it comes in behind the front wheel, is longe rthan an s4. in other words, it comes IN towards the wheelwell about an inch farther (measured at the bottom) than the s4. I know this because the stock ground effects on the sides of the car are meant to sit flush with an s5 fender (they only came on s5s). On one side of my car it does sit flush, but on the side where the s4 fender is, the ground effect sticks in towards the wheelwell an extra inch or so, where the fender stops short.

But they mount up perfectly, and without ground effects being present nobody could detect this difference.

Only some of the Turbo hoods are alum and only some of the N/A hoods are steel.

Many of the S4 N/A cars came with alum hood as well as all the 'verts.

But it was not unusual to find a T2 with a steel hood.

The majority of the body panels other than the hoods (and on the 'verts the trunks) are steel.

Yeah, the majority of t2 hoods are aluminum, but I have run across a couple of steel ones. Good thing about them is, the steel doesnt ding/warp nearly as easily as the AL.

The majority of NA hoods are steel, but as icemark said a good number of early basemodels had AL hoods as well.

Everything else on the car is steel. The doors are the worst part of it all. The fenders (front) are super light, Im talking you can lift one off of the car with one finger no problem. It might weigh 10lb per side. The doors, in contrast, probably weigh closer to 80-100lb per side.

The fenders are different! I have one s4 and one s5, i think maybe about 1mm different at the top, but i get and had more clearance for my wheels with the old s5 fender. I run 235/45/17, everythings super close, and now with s4 on one side it rubs every so often.

I have an s4 and s5, the s5 was wider, now its wider on only one side .

Well I am glad the doors have some bulk, what else will protect me or a passenger in a side impact crash?

are you sure the doors are that heavy? that doesnt sound right.. i had mine apart and it seemed like it was a whole bunch of nothing. are the doors a structral member of our cars? kind like 3rd gen F-bodys? man, if it weighed 100lbs, i think the hinges would be a little more substantial. and i wouldnt be able to move them so quickly. the doors looked so light that i think it would act like a sheet of paper in a side impact crash.

I have a steel TII hood...you can DEFINITELY tell the difference...after working on the car with it, I went to my other, lifted the hood, WHOA, I didnt know what was up...I thought all TII hoods were aluminum and thats just how much it weighed, the other one...

You know you have an aluminum hood when it has 100 dings showing after you wax / polish or repaint it. And I concur, doors are heavy. 75 plus pounds at least.

I have the same question as Matt22...do you need the fenders from the S5 to make everything peachy (I know it'll work w/out it, but still...I mean perfect). I really want the skirts from the S5 and will I need the Fenders to make it all fit right. I don't really want the front bumper...but I might do it anyway (it is quite nice looking ). Thanks ahead of time...
