Angry FD Alternator dual pully WTF....

Okie, I bought a 3rd gen alternator for my S5. This isn't a silverrotor one. Then I got a dual alternator pully from a friend. He was using this on his Silverrotor FD alternator.

I tried to put the pully on my FD alternator and the alt would not spin.

Turns out the flange on the back of it was about .07" wider than the flange of the serpintene pully I took off of it.

WTF mate? Is it safe to just lathe off the extra metal? Is my FD alternator a bastard ?

James

looks like you had the exact same problem as me. what i did was just file down the ring outside of the alt of where you would insert the pully into. by filing it down, it makes teh pully fit and the alt. spins freely. make sure you go get two two goodyear gatorback belts and install them together if you got rid of the ac and power steering like i did. if not, slippage of the belt occurs due to the water pump.

I provided information on why the problem exists. I think that is just as important as fixing it. He seems to have already figured out how to fix it. But he really shouldn't have had to do anything, which is the point I was making. I'll remember to not do that next time.

Actually no you didn't. All you did was tell him why his alternator was bad, and proceeded to bashing someone.

It was not helpful, it was not constructive, it did not contribute. Now please drop it.

I had the same problem. But my pully was $5 at the junk yard. Buddy machined it down and it works great.

Wankel7, although this doesn't Involve me *directly* I am willing to help. If you'd like I can have a look at It and correct what needs to be done. How does that sound? I will PM you with the easiest and fastest turn around to get that Pulley back Into your posession.

Damn... All I ever do is put a couple of the brass crushwashers from the oiling system (i.E. oil cooler), between the pulley and the alt as spacers. So far its worked everytime.

But whatever..

You pulley is wrong because you got a different series alternator than the ones that silverotor sells... Or used to sell...

I had one of his alternators.. and then bought a brand spankin new one from Malloy... Same thing happened.. pulley shim on the back was too shallow..

Another thing I niticed... I always had trouble with one belt being a bit loose witht he pulley that came with siver rotors alternator..... when i went to put it on the new alternator... I noted that one sheve was about 1/8 in deeper in overall diameter than the other... dunno id he's still using the same pulleys or not.. the rotor shaped ones that higgi sells are the same depth and I haven't had the one loos belt problem.

when i Bought a rotor shaped dual pulley from Higgi.... same thing.. pulley shim too small. still needed like 3/16 inch

It appears that the front covers on the late model alternators have a different sized "pocket" around the pulley shaft. They also have a bit different lug bar on the back. the bearing in the front cover is also a bit different in style

I ended up ordered a shim from McMaster.. basically, a washer that fit snug on the shaft and was the corect thickness and outside diameter.

I have the same problem with the the FD alt pulley that came with the silverrotor pulley. The inner sheave is much deeper causing the inner belt to have much more slack. I was hoping to correct this with higgis pulley but according to you it may not. Do you know how I can visually tell if I have a late model alt cover like you did or not?

All dual pulleys are like this, it's the nature of them... I have a bonzaitoyota dual pulley on my s5 alt and had the same issues. You just have to tighten it, driver around for a while, then retighten.

I've also heard of the same thing happening with the RB dual alt underdrive pulley. It just happens...

So why arent higgis dual alt pulleys like that? Just want to know the reason why. Does it have to do anything to do with deflection?

I have the same problem...I'll just live with it until I can get the wide belt conversion. V-belts suck ***

My hIGGI pulley was like that when I first got it as well. Put both on, one was loose, tightened it as much as I could, drove around for a day or two, retightened, and I was golden.

Unless you guys are talking like REALLY loose where it doesnt even contact the surface hardly? I've had the same experience with every dual belt pulley I've ever had. Also remember that no 2 belts are ever exactly the same size, so that doesn't help either.

Mine isn't bad enough where the "loose" belt slips or anything, but it is noticeably looser than the other.

It contacts fine but there's about an inch or so of slack compared to the first belt on the pulley. Also on my s5 alt higgis dual alt pulley was even from the get go. And for what it's worth I have 2 OEM belts from the same production series so they should be exactly the same size.

You're misunderstanding me. Any 2 belts of the exact same part number/size will never be the EXACT same size, it's a simple fact. There's always a little room for error with belts, thats why you can tighten them. That being said, I've had the same issue with every dual belt pulley I've seen or owned (bonzaitoyota, hIGGI, Racing Beat), whether it be the pulley itself or the belt differences. Since they are different sizes, the smaller one just needs to stretch a tad to be the same as the other belt, then you can retighten and they'll be even. Search, I am not the first that has said this, I thought it was common knowledge...
