FC NA motor into a 12a FB?

i've seen a lot of discussions of a TII FB hybrid, but i don't recall any about putting a non-turbo 2nd gen 13b into a FB.

off the top of my head, i'd assume the project wouldn't be as difficult as the TII swap in that the FB trannies are swappable w/ FC NA trannies, to there'd be less driveline work to worry about.

also, would a GSL rearend hold up to the power made by a series 4 NA motor? 145hp IIRC...

i'm kinda going over my options as my 12a just gave up the ghost and this seems worth considering since the NA 13bs are more reliable than the 13bT...and a lot more common...and it'd have about 15 more hp than a -SE.

what do y'all think?

Talk with R Lee. He'll be at Bremerton on Sunday (more likely than not). He had (or still has) an '82 with a ported 13B. It has around 200hp+. He should be able to give you some insight on this path.

Well, you'll definalty need all the NA FC wiring and ECU stuff...

Im asuming it would be VERY similar to swaping in a GSL-SE motor into a 12a car...

Also you needa FI fuel pump, front cover swap b/t the engines so you can mount the engine, lead and trailing coils, pressure sensor, you could string the wiring yourself from the ECU and terminate it. I think you swap oil pans also since the 13B has a mount attached to it. Neve done it myself, just thought about it, but everytime I think about the steering in a 12a with its worm gear and slop, I quickly try to forget about it. Cost 500 bucks for a steering box.

The GSL rear end (LSD) should be able to take it. The problem is going to lie in the tranny though. You'd be better off getting a TII tranny, or even a NA tranny. Remember those 12A's are designed for 100HP. Ask around in the 1st gen section or do a search for how much HP the stock driveline should be able to take. Good luck!

Your stock 83 transmission should be OK. The 79-80 are the ones to stay away from. The 81-91 transmissions from an NA RX-7, Miata, or 626 all have about the same torque capacity. E-Production 13B 1Gens run around the track with 200-230 hp, so I think that you will be OK.

You are going to need an ECU and wiring harness, MAF, fuel pump, 1Gen 13B oil pan, and a new header. I can't think of anything else right now. The 1Gen forum folks would be a better resource. I really need to work on my 1Gen more often.
