FC Mirror disassembly - pics

For what it's worth: I wanted to take my mirrors apart to paint them a while back. A search only yeilded the fact that there were four screws to remove behind the glass but no pics. Some even thought you had to break the glass. You don't. There are four screws to remove behind the glass which you can get at by tilting the mirror as far as it will go to the top and bottom. Two of the screws are on the top side and two on the bottom. Use a light to see in there. The pics are of the mirror apart so you can see the four mounting locations. Of course, reassembly is much easier!

i'm planning on painting my mirrors but i didn't plan on removing the guts from them, you could just wrap making tape around the outside edge of the glass and tape up the front of the glass but i guess it couldn't hurt to see how easily they unscrew.

I just used universal black from Canadian Tire with no clear coat. It's not as nice as the rest of the car but looks fine.

this is some good info, I hate spending all that money painting a car just to see tape rings around the mirrors. with more detail and pics on how to get to those 4 screws I say this should be archived, oddball details like this help out too.

Alright. How in the world did you actually remove the mirror from the housing? I cannot for the life of me find the inside (towards the car) upper most bolt. It seems to be hidden behind the mechanism to move the mirror electrically, and I cannot reach it.

i've been working on a thread about this. i don't think i have pics yet. the factory way, is the reverse of assembly.
the mirror glass is glued to the holder, which is then bolted to the center pivot.
you want to put the whole mirror in the oven on some temp low enough that you're comfortable, but high enough to soften the glue between the glass and its holder. a heat gun would work too
then you want to take something and very carefully pry the glass out of the holder, i think i used an old kitchen knife
you then have something like this miata mirror

after that its really easy, you unscrew that screw and then pop the two ball joints out. it kind of looks like this

and then the 4 screws that hold the mechanism in are just right there.

assembly is the reverse. be gentle i'm not sure you can get any replacement parts
