FC Driveshaft toast...repairable?

The U joint at the slip yoke is cooked in my 86 GXL...it is a manual if that matters...

Anyway, should I take it to the local driveshaft guy and see if he can fix it up with some new joints or just buy a used one?

TIA

Give it a shot, I've only heard of one person who was able to fix them, and I didn't get the skinny on how they did it. I'd get a new driveshaft with replaceable u-joints.. Mazdatrix sells them.

I can get you brand new replacement U-joints for $20 each + shipping.

A new pair is $44.95 shipped to your door w/ delivery confirmation by USPS mail.

I repaired mine and they work like a dream. Screw the $250 Mazdatrix driveshaft and the OEM is even more outrageous.

Unless your driveshaft is dented or way out of balance somehow, then just slap a new set of U-joints in it.

Here's the original thread I started a while back on it and Thaniel scanned the instructions on how to replace them:

I read all that and you are putting the new joint in the old driveshaft. And that is the most cost effective way to do it. After you do that though, go to a driveline place and have them balance the shaft, just in case.
I had the complete job done for $150 which included new U-joints with grease fittings, balanced and checked over. Not bad and it was professionally done.

So this thread gives you two options, both viable.
Do it yourself but have it balanced professionally or have the entire job done professionally, at more cost of course. Its a question of what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

Audioflight - you're in Bay city? I'm in Flint...any suggestions on where I could take that driveshaft around here? I may take you up on the u joints, we'll see what the driveshaft place has to say.

I can also get a used driveshaft from a local guy for $65 but I fear the same shiat will happen down the road...

I don't know where in Flint you could take it, but I get my U-joints from a place that does driveshafts and stuff.

If you want to come up here and meet me in Bay City, I can show you the place. Otherwise, check the Yellow Pages. There is bound to be something.

I can even deliver the U-joints in person for an even $40. I go through that area on my way to Ann Arbor on the weekends to see my gf.
