Has anyone heard about Sumitomo tires? I was thinking about getting a set for my SE the HTR 200's are only $38 a peice. Check them out tell me what you think

I ran the Bridgestone Potenza RE92 in '97 and they were a hazard. Bridgestone Potenza RE88's were on it back in '89 when I picked her up at the dealer, and they were realy bad also. Up here in Michigan you dont know when it will rain, snow or shine, and these tires did little good in any of those! Those two tire made me steer away from Bridge's but I'm glad they've got a better tire in the 930's now

I'm running NITTO 225/45/17 NT 450's all around and I love em. They stick well in both wet and dry conditions.

Toyo T1-S = suck *** too noisy (sounds like a truck tire at the limit), nice tread pattern though.
Bridgestone RE-71 = good tire for it's time (late 80's early 90's)
Bridgestone RE730 = RE-71 replacement. Good grip wet or dry. Corners better than the T1-S in my opinion.
Yoko AVS-i = another good tire for it's time. A little out classed these days by the newer tires.
Kumho Victoracers = The ultimate street tire IMHO. I rode on these for a while on the street. Makes on ramps and any corner infinitely fun.

wow, i didn't know i could fit 18's on a 7, is it possible to run 245/40/18's? in the rear and like 225/40/18's up front.... if not what is the biggest combo w/ 17's or 18's. Ive got those tires too, i like them. I need new ones though

best bang for the buck

are the tires pepboys sells
they are the futuras 205-55-16 the have a sport version and the run for about 60-70 dollars each

i used them on my car beofre i bought some 17 inch rims so i put the in my wifes minivan

talkabout a sport minivan

I've had Kumhos for 20k miles now. They are just about ready to be replaced. They have been pretty good street tires, and at around $70 a piece, you can't really beat them for the price.

The two best street tires out when it comes to dry weather cornering are the Toyo Proxes T-1's and the Yokohama AVS Intermediates. Nothing else comes close in my opinion. Both of these tires wear VERY quickyl though. THe T-1's tend to get harder later on in their life, so they lose grip overt time. The Yokohama AVS's are very comparable to the T-1's, maybe a TAD bit less, grip, but they don't get harder the older they get. They wear very quickly though. My personal choice is the AVS Intermediates. The grip is awsome, and they are a very predicatable tire. They give plenty of warning as they start to loose grip, its very gradual. Also there is a plenty of usable slip angle which makes them great for Auto-x. I was able to keep up and beat quite a few people at the Auto-x's this year who were running DOT Legal R-compound tires, mainly Kumho V700's and some people with Hoosiers.

I dropped 3 seconds on an autocross with the Kumho V700's vs. T1-S tires. It's almost impossible to make up that kind of time without tires and a dry surface. I suspect I could drop another 1/2 to 1 second with a good camber setup up front.

Saying that the T1-S is almost as good as the AVS is not saying much about the T1-S since the AVS are like 10 years old.

Actually, the T1's feel like they have a little more grip than the AVS's, but I still overall like the AVS's more due to the way they feel, and because they don't get harder as they wear more. They also have a stiffer sidewall. Plus the AVS Intermediates can be gotten for around $75/piece.

I am not an"amazing" driver, but I am pretty decent. I placed 4th of 8 at the Bremerton Nationals, and I was the ONLY person in my class running on street tires. The last event in my region I placed 2nd, by less than a 10th of a second to a guy with Kumho V700's. After the last event, we had a fun run day where the same guy had on Toyo Proxes T1's and I consistently beat his lap times by 2-4 seconds. This least season was my 2nd season auto'ing, although due to losing my license, I missed the second half of my first season, and the first half of the second season, so combined, I've had about 1 full season of auto-x'ing experience. I would love to auto-x this year, but I'm going up to Canada(near Toronto) for a 7 month Mechanic/F2000 Racing school. I'm trying to make a career out of Racing.

The AVS Intermediate I found to be marginally better that Comp T/A's (which isn't saying much) They are not in the same league as the Toyo T1-S.

Of the following tires (I've driven the **** out of ALL of them) I like the Toyo and the Pirelli the best but the Toyo's got a noticeable price advantage and grips better in the wet (which I don't care about). I'm all about dry...

Toyo Proxes T1-S
Pirelli PZero Assimetrico
Michelin MXX3 Pilot
Yokohama AVS Intermediate
BFG Comp T/A

The Toyo T1-S is not noisy and ANY tire that has max category grip is going to wear fast.

It depends on what springs you've got and what offset your wheels are - the GC setup I have uses Eibach ERS 2.5" diameter linear-rate springs.
My wheel offset is +40mm at all 4's

what I'm planning on for the rear next time I do tires is upgrading to 18x9's for the rear with 255/35/18's. That will look tight...and the circumferance is very close to oem.

I'm running the 205/55-16 AVS Intermediates on my GTUs. I love 'em. It's my second set, they do wear out quickly, but they are very predictable at the limit and are very affordable.

On my Scirocco I'm running 195/50-15 Pirelli PZero's, also a fantastic tire.

My friend is running the Kumho 712's on his Civic SI and has good things to say about them. He is also running the Falken Azenis as a competition Auto X tire. He claims they are too noisy for the street, but they are a cheap and very grippy tire.

For a STREET tire, if it rains much where you are, Yokohama AVS dB is hard to beat. Pretty decent grip (better than a lot of supposedly more performance oriented tires) decent treadwear, and decent performance in the wet. Nothing outstanding, but decent all the way around and not too expensive. Also quiet... (hence the name...)

damn.... so what springs/struts would u need to get 255/35/18's in there... And this is w/o spacers right? what do u mean offset +40mm?
how do i figure out how big the tires can get? check spring specs?

Nitto NT 555 Extreme--At one time I would say that I would never give off brands the time of day. Goodyear, Pirelli, Michelen, BF Goodrich, Bridgestone and Yokahama were always the tire of choice and of any of these I would love to buy some Michelen Pilots but there outragously expensive. I settled at the time for Nitto 501 Exit GT and they were awesome but the wear pattern was choppy (odd) and it would cause the car to jump crest in the road after about 15000 miles. Anyway I've done the Toyo Proxes T1 and now have the Nitto NT555 and it's a great tire. I've heard that Toyo owns Nitto any truth to this?

how fast is "fast" wear for the t1-s ? I think I'm about to pick up a set but I want them to last 2 years or so. they are the same tread wear as the 712's. 280. that's high compared to some others that are only 180 like yoko a520's.

Tread wear numbers don't mean much. There is no set standard for treadwear, different manufacture's use different scales to get treadwear numbers. I doubt you could get a set of T-1's to last you two years unless you don't drive the **** out of them, or you don't drive TOO much. The T-1's wear pretty similarly to AVS Intermedates. My Intermediates are way over half-used in about 6 months time, but then again I drive about 20k miles a year, and do auto-x, and LOTS of hard driving EVERY day.

It's obvious that FEDREX knows his stuff. The Toyo T1-S is the best choice for a all season street performance tire. The Yoko AVS Intermediate is a outdated tire(bought my first set in 89) thats good in the dry and awful in the wet and cold(of course I could be mistaken I only had five sets).

breesej where did you come up with the noise bullshit? Have you actually used the T1-S? They are not noisy at all!

The Kumho's suck. Spend the extra $10/tire and get A520's. Or if you can find SP8000's I HIGHLY recommend them.

I LOVED Dunlop SP8000's but when I got my new rims I could find my sizes so I went with Sumitomo (they own dunlop) HTRZ II's. They grip like CRAZY but tend to take road camber changes abruptly much like Yokohama AVS intermediates I used to have on my GVR4. I'm usin 215/45/17 Front and 235/45/17 rear and I think they're "W" rated. I can't tell if they're good in rain though since the aluminum flywheel and crank pulley make starts in the wet an exercise in restraint.
