faulty Greddy TT install

I bought the unit used from an rx7club member, though I don't recall who*. It's a Trust/Greddy Full Auto Timer that had its plug cut off for whatever its last installation was. I finally got around to installing it and there are a couple things that just aren't right. My car is an '87 TII. I bought the harness for it, but to simplify how it's spliced I'll describe which wires went where, from the TT to wires off the starter switch respectively:
-Red to White w/ red stripe
-Green to Black
-Blue to Blue
-Black to ground

Now, the ground may not be perfect, but it works really well for my stereo so I think it's fine (I guess I can do a continuity test to find out for sure).

First and most importantly, the turbo timer's main function does not work. I start the car, set any time, turn off the ignition and pull the keys out and sometimes the timer will start counting down, but then when it hits zero the unit just turns off then on again (all the while the car keeps on happily burning my favorite flammable fluid).

Second, when the car isn't running and the keys are out the car seems to be stuck in accessory. Maybe this is the key and I have the blue and green wires mixed up... I will go check and be back in about 15 minutes, but please be thinking about what could cause these problems if I didn't mix them up.

Third, the unit seems to have a short in it, as the backlight will flicker and sometimes the whole unit will flick off for a moment, apparently losing power.

I used 16ga speaker wire for the connections, it seems that the power line on the tt is 14ga, could that cause these problems? This is a little frustrating, I was hoping to use this little bugger as a voltmeter, timer, and idk what else. I also don't know how I can use the other functions it's supposed to have. Do I need to move the tiny switch on the back or hit some combination/hold buttons?

*If you are the one who sold me this tt please contact me.

"Second, when the car isn't running and the keys are out the car seems to be stuck in accessory. Maybe this is the key and I have the blue and green wires mixed up..."

Found that I didn't mix them up, but I tried swapping them anyway. There really wasn't any change except now (and I have since put the wires back the way I originally had them) the car doesn't act as if it's turned to acc or on with the keys out. I am having an even harder time getting it to count down now though and now the car runs as if nothing has been done at all (it shuts down when the ignition is turned off).

I did figure out how to switch between P-1, P-2, L, and H modes. I know the P modes are timers, but what are the L and H? I thought maybe one was a voltmeter and the other something else... but it's hard to say because of how it behaved: It will read 10 and I discovered that if I rev the motor it will slowly climb from 10 to 16, possibly more, but I didn't go past that. Then when I let it back down to idle it slowly comes down to 10 again. It acts that way in both L and H modes. If those are voltmeter modes, it coincides with the notion that my alt is bad. I'm getting a new one tomorrow (S5 this time).

I'll be installing a new alt today (S5). Maybe that will change things up a little, but probably not...
