Fast Idle takes forever to kick down.
Fast Idle takes forever to kick down.
Ok this in on my 87 turbo that is giving me all sorts of fits right now.
The hoses that lead the the thermo wax for the fast idle cam are not flowing the way they are supposed to. If i put my hand to the hose just before it enters the TB it is still only luke warm even though the car is at 180*. Eventually it will come up to temp and work but it takes forever. Then of course after only about 15 the thermowax looses temp and i have to wait a while again for it to come back up.
My suspicion is that it has a plug on the TB end of things. The hoses are clear (couldn't check the 90* tb to block hose)
So would a coolent flush help? or should I just get an adaptor at Loes to run the old garden hose into the TB hose in the hopes that it would clear it out?
Thanks

I pulled my TB apart and found that the passages inside were clogged. It's easy, just take the TB off, and pull off whatever has coolant flowing through it. It'll be full of what looks like dirt. Just clean it out really good and make a new gasket and you should be good to go.
A coolant flush is good for removing deposits around the inner diameter of pipes, but it really needs flow through it to work. If it's not getting flow, it won't do you any good.

coolant flush would help and try to clear away all the clogged rust that is already floating around.
To clean out the TB, Agreen solution helps.
When my TB was clogged with rust inside the coolant passages I actually poured in a little Draino cleaner let it sit for an hour and pressure hose it all out. Cant believe all the crap that was in there. I did the same to my clogged heater core, I couldnt be bothered to take the core out so I pour in Draino cleaner, let it sit, and then I used a nifty garden hose mod I made and hooked it on the heater core pipe, I let water flow in both ends to completely clean it out. Nasty stuff coming out of it LOL

Technically it is supposed to come down at around 70C/158F. I have found though that on both FC and FD throttlebodies the thermowax often takes longer to kick down in cold weather. It's just another reason why modern electronic throttles (Rx-8) are a better design, because they eliminate all this kind of crap. You can try flushing the system out, but you may find that you will just have to live with it as just another 80s car annoyance. The parts are old and the design is very outdated.

do you dive this car in the winter? if not id say remove it and then when it is a colder fall day you just have to keep your foot on the gas a little at start up to warm it up
