I was at the autox today.....after some hard runs got the oil real hot; now now I found a leak between the motor and tranny(behind the oil pan). How do I fix it? Is there a gasket I don't know about? Can anybody DIRECT link me to the part and instructions on how to fix it?

 

Rear main seal maybe???

There is an inspection plate on the bottom fo the tranny. There is also a "weephole" in the bottom of this plate, kinda like a drain just incase there is a leak. WELL, if it looks like its coming from that little hole, it might be the rear main seal.

 

What is it and where is it exactly? How much does it cost? how do you do it?

 

If its comming from the weep hole then its the rear main more than likely. I just replaced mine and it was around 20 bucks at mazda. Its easy to put in but the tranny and all has to come down. If yours is leaking id strongly suggest doing it though or you will fry your clutch. Mine developed a leak shortly after a clutch install( should have replaced it but didnt) and my new clutch lasted about 2 months. I thought it was a bad clutch that i bought but once it was taken apart it was clear what the problem was.

 

So it only hurts the clutch? Nothing motor wise? I was gonna wait until I purchased my T2 Tranny and put it in to replace it if it didn't hurt the motor. So what is the purpose of the rear main oil seal do?

 

keeps the oil inside the motor...
so yes, it would hurt the motor if you left it unattended and too much oil got out.
either way, you really cant drive the car much, even if you kept oil in the car and monitored it, it will affect your clutch, quickly.

so has it been ruled out that the oil is not coming from the transmission? im not sure how it does when the seal on the input shaft starts to leak, but that is a possibility isnt it?

 

could be a failed tranny front seal, which would be bad for two reasons; one, the danger to clutch as previously stated, and 2, the fluid could drain from the tranny leaving its parts un-lubed and un-cooled. i blew up a tranny that way :-)
