fabrication of stock intake and hood

would it be beneficial to open up the filter area somehow to make it more free flowing and leave the stock design that i have on my s5. i am wondering if where the intake hole is by the hood if i can open up a small cowl there and tube the intake to that small cowl opening it up to the air outside. the only problem would be water getting in. maybe leave it like it is and just put the cowl there to force in fresh air right to the opening. does this sound dumb?

its a good idea, but solved only half of the problem. the other half of the problem is the pipe connecting from the airbox....its small. thats the real restriction.
