exhaust with stock ecu question

I was planning to buy an exhaust system for my 1988 turbo ll, racingbeat downpipe, midpipe, and apexi cat back. I heard that running a stock ecu with a downpipe on a fd can cause major damage. Is the same true for my 88 tll, if so what would be a good unit to prevent this problem. And if i had the same setup only without the racing beat downpipe would i be okay.

Thanks.

A fuel cut defender would allow me to put on a downpipe without causing any damage?
