Exhaust Q's

Im working with a s5, currently while excelerating it is way to loud! The exhaust manifold has been replaced with a racing beat header set up. I'm not sure the exact model, but it is 2.5" diameter. Then welded in are 2 straight pipes, looks like the cats were removed one by one. Then what looks to be a factory Y-pipe to a couple borral (something close to that anyways) mufflers. Im a fan of a nice growl, but this is way too much! I have access to a mig welder, do you guys know of anything that i can replace one of the straight pipes with? Anyone have a similar set-up that they like? thanks Jay

I believe a Borla XR-1 welded in might help tone you down a bit. I don't have any experience with it myself, but I hear good things.

Yeah, run Borla XR-1's inline before the muffler's. That will quiet it down a pretty good bit without hurting your flow very much.

Those borlas are $200 a pop.

Oh, and please spell acceleration properly.

$200 a piece is right, but if he wants it quiet without messing with the flow of his exhaust then it's money well spent. Just my .02

So just weld one in before the Y-pipe? Would putting in a cat quite it down a lot if I found a decent high flow one? Im not too worried about passing emissions, but hey if i could kill 2 birds with one stone then what the hell. Car does smell to bad but if its in a garage or something the adour builds up, just another idea. J

If you have a place where the exhaust is still just one pipe then you only need one XR-1. And I would SURELY use that before using a cat in it's place. You'll lose hp by adding a cat to the equation. Plus they are BIG TIME expensive. Most cats I have seen are in the $500-$600 range. I'm not going to pay that much just to lose hp.

Does anyone else have any advice on a single Boral xr1 before the Y-pipe vs a high flow cat? Are there any high flow cats that last for under $250. Will a single one before you Y-pipe still quite it way down?

If you're going to spend 200+ dollars already just buy the RB silencer. If your header wasn't mutilated it should bolt from the end of the header to the front of your Y.

once you go RB header it will always be loud. get the RB presilencer and then choose a cat-back with another silencer and a nice canister. usually duel exhaust is quieter than a single big can. or get some sort of racing cat, the RB presilencer only quiet's it up a little. you need a good soumd muffling cat-back.

stay away from (especially) corksport or apexi n1 if you're trying to go quieter.

I run a cheap Catco high-flow unit in my exhaust. It's cheap, but I don't have many miles on the new exhaust yet so I can't say how long it will last. My exhaust is still stupidly loud, but I believe this is mostly due to the style of muffler I'm using. Not exactly fart cans, but it doesn't do a whole lot of muffling either . If you want the 2.5" diameter inlet/outlet XR-1's, the can be had for less than $200. Summit sells the 16" XR-1 for $137, and the 12" for $126.

By the way, what about using the XR-1 as a rear muffler? If I ran a true dual system with an RB road race presilencer, would the XR-1's work well as rear mufflers?

Since the mufflers that are on the car appear to be almost new, I'm trying to get away with spending $100-200 to try and tone my car down enuf, so I dont get pulled over. When you hit the gas it SCREAMS! Jay
