Exhaust header and downpipe glowing red/yellow....

Well, I have been having a problem with my exhaust lately, which I shoulden't because I bought it from a kid who had a shop install a 100%new exhaust system 2-3 months ago, and he paid 640$ for it to be done.

I was getting exhaust fumes in my cabin really bad, So I had my niebor look at it, he is a mechanic. Well don't you know. There is only one bolt holding the downpipe on, and it was loose. He searched around for a bolt that would fit from his shop, that took over an hour alone. finally got it on, and tightened, great. It finally sounds better then when I bought it.

Two days later, it again smells exhaust like in the cabin, and a noticeable loss in power is felt. It's really dark out. I get out in my driveway after arriving home, and look under the car. Now I was confused, was there a flashlight under my car? No!, The entire manifold was glowing red/yellow, with white/blue flames shooting out of the side where we put the new bolt on. I turned the car off immediately.

I called my mechanic back(he knows pretty much nothing about rotories) and he says that's not supposed to happen, and it means the car is running way rich. I really don't know if this is normal or not, but I'd like to think it's not.

I called the place(Midas in appleton) What they would do for me, and I get this. "Our guarantee only works for the owner who had the work done to it." So basically I'm screwed that rout, but they want to look at it anyways.

Any input here? ...later

youve probably got burnt out cats. and for the glowing, thats probably because of them. they are clogged up inside causing the backpressure to heat up your pipes

yeah, maybe the exhaust he bought wasn't meant for a rotary or something, but it sure sounds like the cats are screwed up.

that sounds like a really good posibility, until I refer to the receipt. The catalitic converter was 116$, why would it be out in three months?, I'll see about removing them to see if that's it though...later

darn, I borrowed my car to my brother last night. I go to use it this morning, and it's the worst I have ever heard it, I'll be having a talk with him. I haven't looked at the pipe yet, but it sounds like it's totally off....later

Damn, that's pretty freakin cheap for a cat. Sounds to me like a custom exhaust not up to the rotary heat. Sorry to say, but I think you're either gonna have to get some pipes or a replacement cat.

I'm gonna get the cat replacement pipes from RB, I'll let you know how they work if I get them soon enough.

You might want to pull it apart and put it back together with new gaskets, and look through the cats to see if they are OK, most aftermarket catalytic converters ($116 sounds too cheep for a rotary cat) cannot stand up to the massive amounts of unburned fuel from the exhaust, and quickly (in a matter of months) kill themselves.

If those bolts get loose, sometimes parts of the gasket get blown into the cat, and cause it to kill itself as well.

Sometimes the material in the cat can shrink SO MUCH, that it gets blasted back into your muffler and gets STUCK. So look through all your piping while you have it out.

Well, I'll probabally end up taking it out, but there is a pipe connected to it. Probabally to re-use some of the gasses? I'll have to do some searching to find out. I would just replace it, but I'm still in high school, with a poor paying job, still paying this very car off...later

Nah, the pipe is the split air pipe, it brings in fresh air from your air pump so that the cat gets more oxygen to preform its job. Without it, the cat wont last long.

Wait till you have it apart to see if it needs to be replaced before you actually replace it.

Well, I got under there again today, it's still leaking bug time out of the downtube connection, but the catalitic converter is now making lots of noise, I think I have found the culprit. Now I just have to think about my options:

1. Remove it(but then how to activate the ports?)
Will it be horribly loud? I don't need police attention
how will it affect performance, asuming I can still activate the ports without it.
2. See if the guys will replace it that originally put it on in the first place.
3. Borrow $ to replace with a nice one.

Ohh, I don't know...later

If option number 2 doesnt work . . .

I have a stock S5 catalytic converter. There is slight warpage on the inside, but it still works! You can have it for, oh . .. FIVE DOLLERS + shipping.

PS: Unless you pick it up yourself, in whitch case, it's FREE.

bah, I'm sick and tired of this, I looked at the reciept in more depth, and here is what I found.
2 mufflers, 91.91 each
catalatic converter, 114.95
misc, 39.95
2 chrome tips, 26.95 each?!

they then proceded to charge 104.54 to install the catalitic converter, and 26.14 for each of the muffler installs.

then they put a yellow sheet of paper with the mechanics putting things on it such as: converter guts loose, and mufflers rotted out.

So, ahh, did they rape him up the you know what to replace these parts they knew were faulty?!!

I'm gonna have a little talk with them...

And to top the entire situation off, there was a bra on the car. I didn't like it, so I took it off. Now I can see he hit something, The front lip is all cracked and missing some pieces on the drivers side corner, and the fender is all smashed in!

past these into your browser to see it.

I'm so confused about that, so from now on, I'll just assume it's not done right unless I have done it myself. I hate people sometimes, no offense...later
