Exhaust dilemma

I need to quiet down my exhaust system but I'd rather not spend too much money or lose too much horsepower.

So I've had my '88 GTU for about 9 months now. The previous owner had an RB header/presilencer with Apex'i N1 duals. As you can imagine, this was loud as all hell. He didn't care though because it wasn't his daily driver and he wanted a very high flowing exhaust system.

When I bought it the whole car would vibrate at highway speeds (75 mph), and it felt like I was getting a back massage or something. I didn't want to sacrifice too much power so I went to a good local exhaust shop and they welded in a high flow cat in place of the presilencer. This killed most of the vibration and stuff but the car is still really damn loud, but I didn't mind much at the time.

A few months ago I was backing out in a parking lot and I hit something on the pavement that I didn't see, damaging the right tail pipe. I took it to the exhaust shop and they had to refabricate some piping to get everything repaired, but the right muffler is slightly misshapen (hardly noticeable, the tip isn't perflectly round anymore on one side) but the silencer won't fit in there. So that's not really an option.

I don't care about the noise but it attracts alot of attention, and now I'm living at my parents house for the summer and the neighbors get pissed when they hear the noise late at night. A cop pulled me over a few weeks ago and gave me warning for my exhaust being too loud, so now I'm a bit jumpy. Plus my non rotorhead passengers think it's obnoxious.

So what are my options without ditching the whole system? Let me also mention that I've got nitrous going in this summer at some point, after suspension. A friend of mine was trying to tell me to go buy a RacingBeat system but I really like the look of the N1's and some other new or used system is going to cost me at least $400 I would think.

He's also convinced that RacingBeat flows just as well as an N1 but is quieter. Can that be possible? Aren't high flow and low noise mutually exclusive? I would think the RacingBeat system just has more restrictive mufflers and resonators. The N1 has a resonator before each muffler but they obviously don't do too much, and the mufflers themselves hardly do anything at all.

So what do you think about getting the cat removed and replacing it with some kind of resonator? Or perhaps replacing the resonators (the ones right before the mufflers) that came with the N1's with something more restrictive. I'd like to quiet it down as much as possible with the least loss of $ and power. It's easy to say "well just buy a new exhaust system" but once again, why should I pay $400+ for more restriction when I could get something welded in for $100 or less? The N1's just look so good IMO.

Anyway, any input would be appreciated.
