exhaust buying help
Hey guys, Ive got an s5, and im searching for a good cat-back system for my seven. I know most people here agree on the racing beat, but has anyone had experience with the dual Apexi N1? I havnt been able to find which would have a better hp gain, and Ive also heard the RB is really quiet. The only other mods done is a new intake since ive only had the car a couple months. Does anyone have advice on the way to go?

ok it depends what route u want to take... If you want "More Power" as you say then a header (racing beat) and any cat-back will really do...i have an rb header with rb mufflers and its loud as hell. But when i put the header on i noticed a big difference in power...so if i was you i would by the header and exhaust package from racingbeat.com <it gives u more power

Thanx alot, ill get right on it. Ive also heard after a new exhaust system is installed, the ecu should get reset or something like that. Ive been doing alot of work on my own car, but ive never once wanted to deal with the car's computer. Is it really neccesary?

well my ecu is screwed up on my car so i cant really tell you. But on my old car i got a custom exhuast on it and my ecu was fine (car computer) so it shouldn't be a problem

The
rb heeader and the n1's is what I was planning. Also, my friend replaced his cat with a strait pipe, because we dont have emissions testing in kansas, but his headback shoots out thick black smoke. Although its a good power gain, it was the ugliest thing ive ever seen. Should i just stick with getting a high flow cat?

Highflow cat or race pipe (no cat) it doesn't make much difference in flow. Race pipes are cheaper so thats why I would go that route. Your friend's black smoke is not a result of having no cat. Its because of a tuning problem I believe. Hopefully someone here will help you out a little more and know enough to be specific. All I know is that not having a cat will not make your car shoot thick black smoke, only flames .

Prior to the HKS exhaust, I had the Borla SS exhaust on my GXL for nearly 25K miles. I replaced the Borla because it was too noisey. At highway speeds, there was always a continuous loud droaning sound in the cockpit. On long road trips the noise became very annoying, and that's why I decided to replace the Borla with the HKS. I still have the Borla exhaust, but the y-pipe is slightly bent. It's for sale, so if you're interested just PM me.
Prior to the Borla, I was running the stock exhaust. The thing with the stock exhaust is that its lifetime seems to be almost exactly 4 years. I once had an 1986 RX7 Sport (BTW, my first RX7), and when the exhaust went out in 1990 (4-years later) I decided to trade it in for my current 90 GXL. Four years later (in 1994), the exhaust needed replacing so I went with the stock replacement. Another 4 years passed, and the stock exhaust needed replacing again so I decided to try the Borla SS system. After all, it did come with a million mile warranty. ;-)

Hey Hot_Dog, with your exhaust experience, maybe you can help me out. My sister gave me her ’88 RX7 convertible just prior to Christmas (she and her husband weren’t using it and it was deteriorating) and I’ve been slowly fixing it up. I replaced the cat with a universal one because it was leaking and earlier this week I had the mufflers replaced with a couple of Dynomax pieces. The owner at the local muffler shop said he had these mufflers in his inventory for quite some time and would sell them to me at cost. I had them put on, and the car is so LOUD now! It has a deep bass tone that I find really annoying --- especially under load or deceleration. I went back today and he took off one of the preconverters, which was shot anyway, and replaced it with a muffler. It made little improvement. He said to drive the car for a couple of weeks and it should quiet down when the insides of all the new components “carbon up” (I really don’t think so). I want the exhaust as quiet as possible. My other car is a Lexus SC400 and it has such a nice, subtle exhaust note.
Any ideas (anyone?)
Thanks,
George

Thanks for the tips, Hot_Dog. I'm gonna start doing some more research based on the info you gave me. Some of the mufflers are said to give a low, sporty or baritone note, which is what I'm trying to get away from. That's what I have now with the new mufflers. Just wish I hadn't already spent $500.00 for the mufflers and cat (and it sounds much worse than the original, partially rusted out stock system!) Oh well --- live and learn!

Thanks for the reply driftseshrx7. I've been doing some checking around and it looks like the quietest system is still stock, or close to stock. I think Walker makes OEM equivalents. I'm going to look into those. I believe Dynomax and Walker are both divisions of Tenneco Automotive. I have the Dynomax mufflers now, but I think that must be more of a performance division. I'm sure if I had gone with the stock replacement it would have been just fine. By the way, anyone know the best site for OEM Mazda parts? I ordered a few things from Vachon Mazda and they seem pretty good, but I'm sure there are plenty of others ...
Thanks,
George
