My T2 smokes at idle sometimes. It goes away for a couple minutes if I turn it off then back on. It does it a few times a week, but is becoming more often. The motor is a 1 yr old J spec, but the turbo has an unknown history, and whines a bit more than others I have had. Also there is some shaft play in it but not a ton. ITs blue smoke and smells of oil. Its not losing enough to noticably mower the oil level but is annoying/embarising. How can I figure out where its coming from? Also I run 10W30 in it, should I run something else?

Take the intercooler off and see if signs of oil coming from the turbo. You can go to a thicker oil and see if smokes less.

 

run 20W50 castrol GTX. probbly wont fix your problem, but thats the oil 90% of FC owners use and swear by.

 

There is some oil in the IC piping, but I dont know how to guage how much is too much.

 

Smoke under WOT full boost-Turbo

If you rev it in N to 6-7K and hold it there for about 15 seconds then let off the throttle does it smoke?

A slight film is acceptable in the IC....

 

It doesnt seem to smoke at WOT, but at WOT I am going fast enough to not see it!
