Engine Transplant Opinions

Hey guys. I just recently got a 1986 N/A RX7, and it runs fine, but the engine has 130,000 miles on it. My first question is, if it's running fine, and I give it some TLC, will it last me for a while, or do you think it doesn't have much left in it???

This brings me to my next question. If I decide to do a newer or rebuilt engine, would I be best off just getting another N/A engine, and running a small shot of nitrous through it, or should I just get the turbo ii engine??

If I get the turbo ii engine, what all would I need, other than the computer?? Would I need a new transmission or new fuel system??

Thanks alot.

Your questions have many answers so here's mine.

Your engine may blow up tomorrow or last another 5 years. Its hard to tell. Your driving habits and the maintenance history of the engine will be a big deciding factor. If you haven't already done so let a qualified rotary technician check the car over real good. If they find anything wrong get it fixed. I've seen many people try to hotrod their engines that didn't run good in a stock configuration. They fully expected to get some performance gains by bolting on some parts. It doesn't work well that way. A good running stock engine could be better than a bad running modified engine. The stock engine is certainly more reliable.

The nitrous engine is a big question for me. I'm not familiar with the side effects of that. The TurboII engine can be very powerful if properly modified. You would have to change the wiring harness or run an aftermarket system plus the added cost of numerous other things you might need to change. It can be done. Many of the board have done it but I like a good ported engine with a well tuned carb. The plumbing headaches are minimal and it weighs less even though the engine may not be as powerful it can still run good. The flywheels are different from the N/A to the turbo engine as well as everything from the transmission back to the rear tires.

Good luck.

Go to the SEARCH at the top of the page, and in the blank where it says name, write KABOOSKI. He has several posts, but the one you want will be selfevident with its title. He has a list of whats required. It was one written in the last week.

Thanks Hailers. I'm new to the sight and still trying to learn all of the tricks that the board has to offer.

No problem GIMP. I was at work when I wrote it and did not have time to make a list. Kabooski has actually done the swap and has been trying to help some of us understand what is involved. The post was https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/show...threadid=26647 just did'nt have time to find it. I did not know about the search on this site for about a month after I found this site. Comes in handy sometimes. Sometimes not. Always finding something new here.
