Engine smokes when automatic shifts

91 RX7 Convertible with automatic transmission does not smoke except when shifting.

Under a soft pedal it doesn't smoke. If I back off the throttle just before the shift points, then it doesn't smoke.

If I keep my foot in it then it will smoke right when the shiftpoint occurs.

Is there some oil metering slash automatic transmission relationship specific to shift points?

Have any of you experienced this or have an explaination?

P.S.
This is my first rotary with an automatic transmission.

what color is the smoke?

Blue=oil
white =coolant
black= gas (running rich)

Since you are asking about the oil metering, I'm asuming its blue smoke. Oil seals on the rotor are letting some oil get by. no big deal unless it smokes like a chimney. It won't get any better until it is rebuilt, but it won't hurt anything.
