Engine Remove & Replace time
Engine Remove & Replace time
I've finally got a replacement engine for my 88 GTU. I'll be starting Friday night removing the accessories and everything. A friend of mine is coming over to help Saturday. He thinks I could possibly have it running again with the replacement engine by Sunday afternoon. What do you guys think is the normal time required to do the swap? I have all the tools necessary including air tools, engine hoist and the experience of having done the swap before.
Sunday afternoon seemed really quick to have the car running again and I was just curious how quick you may have done it before.

If you have all the tools for it, sure I would take two days. Keep in mind you might need to replace misc parts that you might break along the way. I replaced my engine in about 5 days, sissor jack, modest tools, and no light, plus in sub zero temps on the ice cold garage floor. The hardest part is positioning the engine in the car. I found it easier to put the motor mounts on last while its hanging by the cherry picker. And then reconnect everything. Once you have all the hard stuff done, It's really simple.
You'll have it running Sunday with no sweat if........you don't constantly take a bunch of breaks, long lunches, gabbing and not working, smoke breaks etc, and don't break a significant part. One person could do it by Sunday. Two, it depends if he showed up to drink your beer or work.
