Engine rebuild help.

Hi all. I am about to have my 1990 GTU engine go out for a stock rebuild, maybe street port if I have the enough funds for that. But, I need some recommendations on the rebuild process itself. Besides the engines internals, what are the recommended external parts and/or peripheral components should I replace while I have the engine out of the car and toredown. Or, what upgrades are popular during this process? Items such as water pump is a must, but, what else specifically? Upgraded aluminum radiator? Hoses? oil lines? Pulleys? Can somebody help me out with a rundown or list of items that should be replaced as a general rule of engine r&r. Thanks.

Until you have the engine out and disassembled its hard to tell what it might need. The rotor housings may be junk, or maybe not. The plates might need lapping to be in spec but maybe not. You just don't know till its disassembled and inspected throughly. As your in CA I wouldn't suggest porting it much if any. You may end up with a car you can't legally drive on the road. Others from CA might be able to tell you more than I can since I live in AL

Externally I'd recommend new hoses including the oil cooler hoses. They tend to leak when older. Belts are another good item. Water pump if you've never done it but I reused mine as it was replaced 4-5 years ago and only had 5K miles on it. Clean everything real good as it makes assembly and installing much easier. Probably want to get your injectors cleaned and checked also. RC Engineering is one of the popular companies that provides this service. $25/injector I think with before and after results.
