Engine Rebuild Help

hello, i have a 1986 mazda rx7 gxl n/a, I tore down my engine the other day. I decided to replace the rotor bearings and the stationary gear bearing is there anything else i should be replacing? The motor has around 296,000 miles on it. As i said i am doing the stationary gear and rotor bearings, normal stuff like apex and side seals, gaskets, ext. This is my first experience with a rotary so any help is greatly appreciated.

congrats on the 296,000 miles ...

get the FSM here: Foxed.ca and it won't hurt to either print the Engine section or pick up a Haynes manual as well.

as far as your question for "what you should be replacing" is concerned, it really comes down to what you find when the spec the engine. clean everything thoroughly first, then measure everything according to your manual and see where your parts are. since you have already committed to replacing all seals and springs, the apex slots on the rotors and the flatness of the sealing surfaces are probably going to be most important. judging things from photos can be a hit or miss affair, but it might be helpful to post photos of things you find yourself unsure about during the process.

only other tips i can think of are: use REW or MSP corner seal springs

I did find a local shop through a friend that builds performance rotary engines, i am going down there tomorrow to have them look over everything and maybe see about doing either a street port or a bridge port since the engine is already apart and i hopefully after this i wont have to take it apart for a good while and get it road worthy before i leave for college. I got my stuff from atkins rotary and my apex seals from rotary aviation

At 296k miles I could pretty much guarantee the irons are out of spec and should be lapped and renitrided. Also I doubt the housings are any good. Check for *ANY* chrome flaking along the edges. If it's present reusing them would being doing a disservice to your rebuild and result in lower than desirable compression numbers. They will most certainly need to be replaced. Housings with chrome flaking cannot be restored/refinished, only replaced.

FWIW.

Regards,
Crispy

the housing are actually in pretty good shape there's no scoring, chatter marks or anything showing crazy wear, other then from the combustion area that has turn a little black the shop they look really good, im not sure if the engine has been rebuilt before as i did buy it with the engine not wanting to turn over, i did notice when i was pulling it there was a ground wire that was not bolted down fully and the emissions stuff removed so someone might of rebuilt in the past but im not sure the guy i bought it from was planning on doing a LS swap but didnt have the money to do it and need the garage space.
